Have you ever had that one teacher who changed your life? If you could return the favor, would you? This CCISD educator of more than 20 years has dedicated her life serving elementary students. On June 18 Brandy’s 46-year-old life changed when she received a Myelodysplastic Syndrome diagnosis. No one ever expects the “C” word to come into their lives especially someone as young and vibrant as our Brandy. Brandy’s cancer requires she take the full year off school since her white blood cell counts will be so low. In addition to a Stem Cell Replacement, a 30-100 day hospital stay as part of her treatment will be required. Of course there will be many follow up appointments as the doctors make sure things run smoothly. Unfortunately, not being able to work means that her paychecks will end before the year does. And as we all know, the medical bills will continue to accumulate even with insurance. Her beautiful children and loving husband are attempting to find peace of mind throughout this horrific time in their lives. Please consider donating to help Brandy and her family, and spread the word to everyone you know. Your donation will go immediately to Brandy and her family. Your generosity is so very appreciated!

From Brandy's loved ones:

Too fast...
Last weekend pneumonia hit Brandy, and before anyone could blink an eye, she was whisked to ICU and intubated. Three days later she was back on the stem cell floor. Unfortunately, her condition continued to worsen. Her beautiful family was summoned to the hospital because the doctors needed to talk. Heartbreakingly, the doctors explained they have exhausted their efforts. Out of unconditional love, the decision has been made to move Brandy to comfort care only. Today, she is unresponsive but comfortable. Her family remains by her side, along with the friends she made feel like family every day. Her body has fought extremely hard through inconceivable struggles.

At this point, prayers for a miracle for our unicorn are needed. Also, her family will continue to need help through this time. Medical costs have exceeded anything they could have imagined. Recovery for John and the two children, Sabrina and Matthew, will be long and hard. We will keep you updated as we are able. Thank you for your continued support and prayers.

Brandy’s personal update:
First, thank you to all of you who have helped me on this site. Your generosity is OVERWHELMING!! It has been a long struggle but knowing that my family won’t have to suffer as much financially because I am unable to work due to the nature of this disease is an enormous relief. The medical bills continue to come in so my sincere thanks to all of you.

Now for the medical update: I am on day 86 since my stem cell bone marrow transplant on October 30 (my “new” birthday) for the myelodysplastic syndrome which was diagnosed on July 2, 2018. The doctors say the first 100 days are the most critical after a transplant. I was released from M. D. Anderson the day after Thanksgiving after 30 days in the hospital. After 3 weeks of daily trips to MDA for blood draws and infusions as necessary, I was readmitted on December 7 due to kidney problems. Then my liver chimed in. They started me on high-dose steroids to address the somewhat rare venous occlusion disease in my liver and then started me on dialysis to help my problematic kidney. After ANOTHER 32 days in the hospital they discharged me on January 8, 2019. What a way to start the new year. However, since I had been on a very high dose of steroids for such a long period of time which affect your pelvic musculature, I needed assistance just to get out of bed and was only getting weaker. I then had to be readmitted to MDA just 3 days later because I was just too weak and was no longer ambulatory. I am now on day 12 of what will hopefully be my last stay here at MDA. My liver and kidney numbers are now stabilized, and the focus now is to build my strength back up. I hope to be moved soon to the inpatient rehab floor here at MDA for some serious physical and occupational therapy so I can go home. Wish me luck!
