Hike to Heal: Lori's Journey to 60

Are you ready to become part of an inspirational journey? Let’s make magic happen for a very deserving woman.

Nearly a year ago I met Lori Brookes in Joshua Tree National Park. It was a brief, but connected exchange. I knew immediately that there was a story behind this woman and my intrigue with her was instant! I discovered (surprisingly) she was turning 59 in April and decided to prescribe herself a year-long journey of hiking her way to her 60th birthday. She calls it her “Sixty60 Journey”; sixty hikes to sixty years. We met just after hike number six.

My initial assumption was that this journey stemmed solely from a strong affinity for nature, but once our friendship began to unfold, she shared her personal story of grief and finding a way out of darkness.  Her journey was born out of two things; one a long grieving period over the loss of a young man who was like a son to her and watching her 80+ year-old parents painfully decline from inactivity. What began as a simple idea of hiking her way to her 60th birthday, is paving the way for much more than she anticipated. A life-long foundation for a solid physical and spiritual connection, and reaping the rewards and benefits this healthy path is offering.

This sun-kissed, mountain conqueror, with her trademark grey mane, surpassed her original goal of sixty hikes in August 2016 at the top of Tahquitz Peak in Idyllwild and subsequently tripled the goal to take 180 hikes by April 2017! Incredible! She will be celebrating this remarkable achievement with a 4-day trek in Cusco, Peru — backpacking across the Andes to the Rainbow Mountains. She now refers to the new goal of 180 hikes as a metaphor for her journey — an 180º turnaround in all aspects of her life. She is a professional photographer and writer, and as a part of the process has been documenting the “Sixty60 Journey” from her first hike in April 2016 in hopes of sharing it with anyone who’s interested in connecting with her travels, growth and what she calls the ‘Unintended Consequences’ of hiking. All positive!!!

She embarked on what was a simple idea and it has become a larger than life quest. She humbly smiles when people reach out to thank her for her inspiration. I would personally like to thank her for being an exceptional friend and for showing me how to savor the joy of the journey. As of this writing she is on hike number 140 something. I have great respect for you, my trailblazing friend.

Her trek to the Rainbow Mountains in Peru is paired with a large financial undertaking and I would love to help her achieve her goal. Let’s rally around this incredible woman! Let’s ensure that Lori Brookes is standing at the peak of the Rainbow Mountains on her 60th birthday, with the sun on her face in the wind in her hair. Any donation to help fund her celebratory goal will be greatly appreciated!
