Long Journey for Sara

Hello everyone.  As you may already know,  Sara has just recieved a very serious diagnosis.   After months to years of health issues we  got confirmation in Iowa City on January 8th that Sara has a very large brain tumor and will be having brain surgery to remove it. It is a sphenoid (indicates location) meningioma (type of tumor- forms on lining between brain and skull). It is 7×4.5×4.4 cm big and is so large it's displacing her brain and causing blindness, hearing loss, memory loss, and behavioral changes. She has more imaging on the 18th and she will be undergoing brain surgery shortly after that. Luckily, the type of growth it appears to be is usually non cancerous. But, it will still be a major undertaking, and she will need everyone's support.  Any help of any kind will be more than appreciated.  I set this up to help with the expenses of travel, hotels, missed work,  and medical expenses.  Most of you know Sara has had a rough few years with her health,  and it's been especially bad the past 12 months.  However, this diagnosis and undertaking (even as monumental as it is) will hopefully solve many problems and Sara can get her life back.  VERY sincere and huge thanks to everyone for all the kind words,  prayers,  help and support! If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask, it is ok....Arnold Schwarzenegger was wrong P.S. For those who don't know, the whole "Arnold" thing is a joke from one of his old movies and it makes Sara and I laugh

4/14 update.

Hello everyone. I thought I would give everyone an update about Sara, as it's been about a month now. Unfortunately, she has had a very tough month as things aren't going the best. Long story short, she has been dealing with on and off votes bouts of severe confusion (but that is considered normal). What isn't normal, however, are the infections she has been fighting. Currently, she is battling with a staph infection. She is being treated for this, and has an upcoming appointment with the wound clinic. She also hasn't gotten much vision back in her right eye, but she had an appointment for that as well next week. Keep your fingers crossed.

One positive is the bouts of extreme confusion seem to be reducing. she has a follow up in Iowa City at the end of this month, so we can get a better picture of whether or not she is where she should be in her recovery. She will also see her oncologist, who is performing her radiation therapy. This was supposed to start over a month ago, but she has been too sick, and then had that other surgery to put the shunt in. Hopefully, she'll be able to start, but like I said, she isn't doing very well.

My pretty lady is doing everything in her power to stay strong and positive, but her body and illnesses are fighting her every step of the way. She/we have a LOT of appointments coming up and she will need a lot of strength and support. Any kind words, prayers, support, and love you guys could show Sara would be more than appreciated. I'll have more updates after her appointments. Thank you everyone and have a good Easter!

We're home!

Hello everybody-
I wanted to let everyone know Sara did great!
Her surgery started about 2 hours late, but
that was about the only hiccup. Her surgery
lasted about 2 hours. They put in a shunt,
basically a funnel controlled by magnets, and
connected it to a tube that runs under her skin
to her stomach.

The swelling it's going down surprisingly fast.
Sara is doing So much better. Other than the
pain from the incisions, she is going great.

Once she can get her sutures out and the
incisions heal, she can get back on track
with the radiation, as that is still needed asap.

I will of course keep updating as things

3/12-Unexpected events

Good evening everyone!
Yesterday Sara and her mother were in Iowa
City to meet with her oncologist (the dr who is
performing her radiation treatments) and get
fitted for a protective face mask. She also
had another round of imaging.

Unfortunately, all plans for radiation were
immediately put on hold once the MRI results
came back. Sara is actually having severe
swelling both externally and internally. this
had been causing many issues that we were
chalking up to normal recovery. She has a
massive build up of spinal/cerebral fluid that
is putting pressure on and displacing her

As a result of this Sara is having emergency
surgery tomorrow to have a shunt put in. this
be a permanent internal "drainage system", as
fluid build up will likely be a long term

Sara is of course bummed out and just wants
to get past this. However, she is optimistic
as this should pretty quickly fix many of her
issues. Bonus- it should hopefully be just
one night in the hospital.

Once she heals from THIS surgery, she can
get back to radiation. I'll have updates
tomorrow with how things turn out.

Thanks again to everyone for their support!

Update feburary 22

Hello everyone-
Sara had her first appointment with radiation
oncology in iowa city this morning.

First off we found out her tumor isn't
malignant (type 3) stop that is amazing.
However, we did find out it is type 2 (type
1 is benign). So her tumor is in between
those two types which means it is atypical
with part of her tumor either cancerous or on
it's way too being so.

With this being the case, she will require a
LOT of radiation therapy. However, due to
the location of the remaining tumor (it was
starting to grow roots into her brain, and is
right next to her pituitary gland and around
her optic nerve), they have to do very small
doses at a time to avoid disastrous
complications. This will require her to have
radiation every day Monday through Friday

For right now we're having to wait for a while
because she is too weak and unhealthy to
start treatment. She has an appt in a few
weeks for MORE imaging and to get fitted
for a custom mask to protect her from the
radiation treatments.

This is not the best news and is a little scary
but sara is handing it well, as she has
through her whole ordeal to this point.

Unfortunately, this will lead to insane travel
expenses and other bills, along with missed
work. We are eternally grateful for the help
and support we have recieved to this point,
but any additional donations or other forms
of support are still very much in need.

Again, I (we) cannot believe the outpouring of
support she has gotten thus far and I will be
everyone updated.
