Lombok humanitarian appeal
Donation protected
My objective is to assist in the rebuilding of family homes destroyed in the earthquake. I will do this by traveling back to Lombok and utilising money raised to purchase building material.
As part of the process I will ensure that 100% of money raised will be given directly to those who need it the most. I will regularly post photos of the construction that takes place as a direct result of monies raised
Background information
On August 5 2018 a earthquake measuring 7.0 struck the island of Lombok Indonesia. It was the main shock following a forshock of 6.4 on July 29. It was followed by another 6.9 earhtquake on August 19 2018. Officials state that 80% of structures in North Lombok were either damaged or destroyed. A total of 563 people were confirmed killed, more than 1000 injured and 417,000 displaced. Local residents have setup makeshift camps to accomodate those displaced
On October 18 2018 some 2 months after the earthquake I was invited to visit 4 local families who had been affected by the earthquake. What I witnessed was widespread destruction with all four of the families homes extensively damaged with 2 of the homes completely destroyed. They were all grateful that everyone was safe but still very traumatised by the horrific experience. They were all living in tents/damaged accomodation which is substandard to say the least.
The Indonesian people are resilent and will recover. However many have lost their jobs and without money they are finding it impossible to rebuild ie the tourism industry has been obliterated. Aside from this the average salary is around $180 per month and most houses have been in the family for decades. Given this most families have almost given up hope of ever rebuilding.
Whilst in Lombok I decided to help out myself and went with a local family and purchased a significant portion of the required building materials for one house. The houses are simple and basic and the total cost was around $900 dollars. I estimate that the total cost of building material for a house to be around $2500.
