The LOEL Home Delivered Lunch Meal program helps homebound seniors remain independent as long as possible by delivering a hot nutritious meal daily to their home. It is a further outreach to local seniors who cannot enjoy our congregate lunch program at LOEL Senior Center. What matters most to us is that seniors do not feel isolated, helpless and alone. However, the center has discovered over the past 40 years that these seniors’ needs go deeper than nutrition. Many of the elderly we serve live in isolation, lonely and depressed. The LOEL Senior Center prides itself on helping those seniors that would normally have no one else to care for them.
Currently, the meal delivered to the seniors by the County is a frozen meal. They deliver once a week, giving the seniors 5 frozen meals and 5 milks every Monday. The LOEL Home Delivered meal is made each day fresh from our LOEL commercial kitchen by our in-house cooks. The monthly menu created in-house is supported by a LOEL Registered Dietician consultant to make sure each meal is balanced and is providing the needs of our seniors.
The LOEL Home Delivered Lunch Meal program is very important not only for the nutrition of the meal, but for the contact with the seniors daily. Case in point, in the past we have delivered a meal and unfortunately found a senior had fallen. Thankfully we are there daily and were able to help that senior. We have also witnessed seniors feeding their pets their meal and partnered with PALS to also deliver pet food to the senior, so both senior and pets were able to eat.
We have a great number of volunteers that work with us on the program. We have “packers” that sit in the van and prepare the delivery of hot and cold items for each home visit. We have a runner who walks to each residence and delivers the meal to the door. This runner sometimes goes in the home for the delivery if the senior needs more assistance. At every stop the runner is always talking with the senior and assessing the situation at the home to make sure everything is going well for the senior. They report back to the LOEL Driver if something needs to be addressed. The LOEL Driver then alerts the Meals Coordinator and she will contact the senior directly, to see how LOEL may be able to help them. The LOEL Coordinator will also call family to assist in the seniors needs.
