Hi there! I am Allira. I am a social worker, university tutor and homeschooling Mum of 4 (almost 5!).
For the last 5 years I have worked voluntarily supporting homeschooling and natural learning communities around Australia, offering community support including: homeschool camps, youth groups, counselling for teenagers and parents of homeschoolers and organising homeschool support groups online and in person. 3 years ago, I started Start Homeschooling Australia, and a new idea was born! offering low-cost online programs for home educating teenagers, to help to prepare them for university.
In 2018 I would love to extend this community support out further. You may not know, but there is very little government funding for homeschoolers in Australia. This means that basic services like health and healthy relationships education are not being offered to our young people, which can leave them in a very vulnerable position as they start to branch out in to the world. I have been facilitating these classes and workshops in 2016-17 and am planning to branch out in 2018 with a travelling Homeschooling Support Hub, which will aim to provide the following, to home educating communities in QLD and then around Australia:
- healthy relationships and safety education for parents, children and teens
- individual counselling/ support for parents who are struggling
- camps, workshops, and parents retreats for parents needing a break
- helping smaller communities to set up their own homeschooling support services
I am fully qualified and have over 8 years experience working at university, in women's support and counselling services and domestic violence services. I am passionate about ensuring that our children have equal access to information, and that our families are supported in our communities. But it is a big job, and getting funding in this area is almost impossible! If the target is met, these funds will be used to:
- purchase a bus and equip it with basics to travel to local communities
- subsidise the first few months of travel to smaller communities
- enable me to set up basic support in the form of counselling, workshops and small community camps in homeschooling communities
