The Literal Change Project

The Literal Change Project is providing the incarcerated population with the necessary tools and skills for literacy proficiency. The need for literacy has never been more crucial for those seeking education, employment, and career opportunities. On a general level, we believe that access to these educational programs will work to reduce the remand rate and prevent recidivism. We are able to teach the skills and provide the knowledge necessary for indivudals to navigate a society that is overwhelmingly dependent on print and text.
Our project specifically targets the illiterate remand community and inmates who struggle with literacy limitations. This initiative takes place within Toronto's detention centres. We provide clinical intervention in the core literacy areas of decoding, encoding, spelling, comprehension and written language.
By identifying and filling the gaps in literacy proficiency among the remand population and teaching them technical skills and strategies, we are moving the group towards positive community involvement.
Our next step is to raise money to fund our staffing, supplies, and transportation costs.
We believe that our project can truly help these incarcerated individuals reintegrate as confident, functional members of society.
Any amount will greatly help our cause!
