What's So Special About Literacy?
Literacy is a key to emotional health and level of life success. It even determines life expectancy, or how you can expect a life to be lived.
For instance, did you know that some states actually base part of their prison-bed need projections on their current elementary students' reading test performance? (Literacy Project Foundation)
As many of us suspect by now, testing can help leaders make policy decisions, but it's not the way to a child's (or an adult's) heart.
Perhaps ironically, if children simply love to read and spend a lot of time happily doing so, their test scores are guaranteed to rise. (Kids in the 98th percentile read an average of 65 minutes a day!)
And, importantly, kids who learn to love reading can become more compassionate adults. Yes, empathy is tied to a literate life.
