2023 Lit•e•race•y Book Fundraiser

Donation protected
We're back for Round 4 of Lit·e·race·y! Thank you for your continued support in making this possible year after year!

Lit·e·race·y is a back-to-school fundraiser running August 1st through 21st. The goal is to raise money to buy books written & illustrated by Black & brown authors from local Black-owned bookstores for teachers to provide their students. By doing so, we empower our youth and expose students to diverse stories to start conversations about race & history at an earlier age all while supporting local businesses and underrepresented authors! The fight to end racism will take generations and conversations, it continues forward with us! At the very base of it: Representation matters.

In the last three years, we raised over $10,000 to provide 700 books to 96 classrooms across 13 states!! Can we reach even more kids this year?? Let's keep growing!

How can you help?

Last year's recipients can sign up again; there will be enough to go around to all!

ADOPT A CLASSROOM!
Brown v Board of Education ended segregation in schools only 70 years ago, but did not end racism in education & literature. This is how we continue to fight where textbooks stop. With a $70 donation, you can guarantee a classroom at least 4 brand new books!

How I came up with this idea...
My best friend is a fourth-grade teacher and posted about a reading program on race she created for her students in summer of 2020. She was going to buy all these books herself when I realized that teachers give enough of themselves and their wallets for their students. It is also OUR responsibility to educate future generations in our community and make society less racist than when we entered it.

Why Black and brown authors?
According to research conducted by the University of Wisconsin...
Only 28% of all children's books published in 2018 had Black, LatinX, Native American, or Asian characters.
Less than 22% of all children's books in 2018 were written by Black, LatinX, Native American or Asian authors.

Why Black Bookstores?
Systemic racism has created a racial wealth gap, making it harder for Black families to create generational wealth. "White average wealth is 6.7 times greater than Black average wealth."

THANK YOU for your donation and commitment to being anti-racist. This is just one of many ways we show Black voices, Black stories, and Black Lives Matter. Please share on social media and spread the word to help us make the largest impact we can on future generations!
