Lisseth Ortiz Emergency Fundraiser

Donation protected
On the afternoon of Tuesday, December 27, Lisseth Ortiz was taking her 10 month old daughter out of her car when the unimaginable happened: a speeding driver lost control and came crashing into Lisseth and her baby. Lisseth had to be airlifted to a trauma center in Baltimore to get treatment for her life threatening injuries while her daughter had to be taken to a nearby hospital for her less serious injuries (see Fox 5 DC News Story on Lisseth's Accident). Fortunately, Lisseth's condition was stabilized but the accident caused her to lose one of her legs. Lisseth's daughter was quickly treated for her minor injuries and was released to the custody of her father, Manuel Valle.

Now that both mother and daughter are doing okay, Lisseth and Manuel must face the daunting challenge of dealing with all the medical expenses and and the rehabilitation costs for Lisseth's injuries, both physical and mental. Manuel, who is a self employed handyman, will have to take an unpaid leave from work to take care of his wife and daughter throughout Lisseth's rehabilitation. With no other family in the U.S. to help, Lisseth and Manuel will undoubtedly face many financial hardships in the days and months to come.

This fundraising page is set up to assist Lisseth and Manuel cover all the expenses that they will incur in the coming year. With both Lisseth and Manuel out of work, coping with the mental and emotional trauma of the accident will become an unsurmountable task without the financial help of people like you. Please donate any amount that you can--every last penny will go a long way to helping this small family heal.

Thank you.

UPDATE, December 29-Lissetth underwent another surgery today to repair damage to her intact leg. Lisseth's daughter was taken back to the hospital by her father for another medical evaluation due to erratic behavior. Preliminary results indicate that the behavior is likely due to mental trauma from the accident, but doctors will continue to keep a close eye on her condition.

UPDATE, December 31-Lisseth is still recovering at the Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore and is extremely grateful for the outpouring of support she has received over the last few days. Her message to all those that have donated or have supported in other ways is "thank you"--she asks that you keep her in your prayers as she knows that the next few weeks will be difficult for her and her husband. Lisseth's baby is doing well and is being taken care of by her grandmother, who flew in from El Salvador to help. As traumatic as this event has been, Lisseth has shown great strenth and is ready to move onto the next stage of her recovery and rehabilitation.
