Support for Lisa’s Celebration of Life

Lisa Florence Kaufer aka “Lisa the Fighter”

Last year, May 25, 2018 Lisa was given the devastating news that’s she’s been diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer.
If you personally know Lisa, then you know that she is the care taker of her granddaughter Rockell, a shaken baby survivor.  Lisa has literally been Rockell’s angel since Rockell was shaken at just 6 weeks old.
This diagnosis didn’t only mean changes & hardships for Lisa, but for her sweet granddaughter who relies on her too.
The good news was they caught it early, the bad news was that she was about to embark on what would become the greatest, most challenging battle of her life. Literally the fight of her life was ahead of her.

She endured 10 rounds of the most intense 5FU chemo treatment plan out there without a single hitch. She partnered with her oncologist & a naturopathic oncologist and literally sailed right through with little to no side effects at all (other than hair loss which was beautifully masked by all of her fancy wigs :) )
Once chemo was complete she was strong enough & prepared for the whipple surgery. An intense 8hr procedure which removes the gallbladder, part of your intestines, the now shriveled cancer tumor and just basically shifts & moves everything around inside. That was a success & she came out 100% cancer free!!! Praise God, at this point she believes she’s healed & ready to move forward with life.

A few short months following the whipple she was ready to have her port removed because chemo is behind her. Before doing so they did blood work & CT scans just to make sure she’s good to go. And this is when her story changed & things took an unexpected turn for the worse. Turns out the cancer had spread to her liver. So back to chemo she goes which doesn’t work the 2nd time around. This time chemo is not successful & instead of shrinking this newfound liver tumor, it was growing rapidly.
To make a long story short, she went from oncologist to oncologist all over Oregon seeking help & for someone to treat her with something & every time came up short. Nobody really wanted  to treat her at that point & quite frankly we feel everyone had given up on her & just basically wanted to keep her “comfortable.”

Well that wasn’t gonna fly! Kaufer’s never give up! Lisa & her faithful husband Jim were nowhere near the point of throwing in the towel so at that point they set out to several other states searching for a trial she may qualify for. After checking with trials in Arizona, Washington, & San Diego they found a great partnership with Moors Cancer Center at UCSD. This is great news because it means someone is giving her a chance at life!! The problem is Lisa lives in Oregon & the treatment must be done in San Diego!! This will be not only be  a huge financial strain  but also a strain on her body with all of this traveling every 3 weeks. Regardless, Lisa wasn’t giving up and her and Jim were up for the challenge so full steam ahead! Operation get Lisa healed continues!

This brings us to this past Saturday July 13, 2019 where we almost lost her.  :(
She came to San Diego for her 2nd treatment, and all went well, however her stomach was extremely swollen and she was in a lot of pain. She was taken by ambulance to the hospital where they admitted her, drained her stomach, 10 liters of fluid over the course of 2 days, there was a lot of air & blood in her abdominal area which meant something possibly burst, ended up being a bleeding ulcer, plus she mysteriously had lost 3 pints of blood and was getting a blood transfusion, her heart rate was so high and blood pressure so low that the rapid response, crash cart team stormed the room to help stabilize her, it was literally a CRAZY touch & go situation. The doctor asked Jim to notify the family and Lisa’s daughters flew in from Hawaii & Oregon to possibly say their goodbyes. It was bad...real bad.

Miraculously Lisa fought through & by the grace of God has been given the opportunity to continue her fight. She’s not done fighting yet and she literally says these words out loud daily, “I am healed, I am renewed, & I am restored in the name of Jesus.”
So we stand with her, we praise the Lord with her & we believe with her that those words are true.

She has many goals but the short term goal is to get her bleeding ulcer healed up and get her nourished and able to eat so she can be strong enough to get on a plane & come home to Oregon. Then, God willing she would continue her trial & beat this evil cancer once & for all.
She knows this is still a very long road ahead & there are many moving parts with so many different potential bumps in the road, but that's ok.  She’s so positive & so full of fight that how can we not support her and be on board with believing & claiming a full 100% healing!!?!!
Baby steps & we’ll take it day by day and support her always.
All of the overwhelming love, support, prayers, & blessings are appreciated & felt so much. She is beyond grateful.

Thank you & God bless,
