Whether it's been an hour or a lifetime, those who know Lisa Ballot know her strength; her candid perspective, her tenacity, and her selflessness have always been parts of her character that everyone knows and values.
On July 29, my mama didn't feel quite right. She was on the treadmill and the entire right side of her body was tingling and numb. She drove herself to the ER, expecting testing to show a stroke. What has come to fruition over the last 20+ days is much more sinister.
The swelling in her brain is located mainly on the left side on her thalamus, the part of the brain that controls sensation, consciousness, alertness and motor signals. We have watched as she went from speaking, moving and responding to her current state at ORMC's Neuro ICU-- hooked up to a ventilator, unable to move or respond to us.
Doctors are saying that this is an auto-immune reaction that is affecting the brain, but as to which AI, we are still unsure. The top minds of this hospital have not seen something like what is being presented, so we are in uncharted territory.
On Friday, August 16 she received a brain biopsy. We hope that the cultures / stains / tests done on the multiple samples will be able to give us answers. So far the immuno-suppressant therapy of plasmapheresis, IVIG and high-dose steroids have not given any viable improvement.
While we are lucky that Lisa has insurance, this is a long, arduous journey ahead for her. We can only assume she will return home to us after we find our answers and treatment here, but the recovery and requirements will greatly benefit from the kindness and generosity of her village.
We want to take a moment to thank everyone who has reached out and prayed for Mama Lisa's recovery, strength and perseverance during this mystery. Thank you for your continued love and support to us during this trying and difficult time.
