My sister Lisa was diagnosed with Low Grade Ductal Carcinoma In Situ breast cancer two days before Thanksgiving, 2017. She’s 41 and just had her first mammogram which showed the cancer. Our mother died at the age of 46 from lung cancer, when Lisa was 21, so it's scary to see cancer reappearing in our family.  Lisa is an artist and also works three jobs to support herself.  Being single, she only has her income to rely on.

Lisa is a very healthy eater and has always taken good care of herself, so this diagnosis is quite a shock to us. Due to the size of the tumor, the doctor recommends a mastectomy, so she will be having a double mastectomy and reconstruction within the next month. It will take almost a year of surgeries and procedures for a full breast reconstruction and at this time we’re not sure about chemo and radiation. She has scoliosis and wore a back brace for 4 years as a teenager. Her scoliosis will affect her reconstruction as her rib cage is very disfigured. Her lungs don’t have the regular space in her chest cavity to expand as they should. I’m hoping to raise funds for her to help pay the medical bills and living expenses during this time, since she will be out of work for a while to recover and will have a number of follow-up appointments after the surgery.  I have no idea how much all of this will cost, but any amount of help is greatly appreciated since this will be financially draining on her.   She has been a caregiver for people up until their death and she’s always eager and open to helping people. Now I'm hoping we can help her at a time when she needs it the most.

Thank you for any support you are able to provide.  Lisa and our family are very thankful for the outpouring of love and support from family and friends so far.  It has been so helpful and appreciated.

Lisa had her surgery today and everything went very well! The surgeon removed some lymph nodes and tested them to make sure the cancer hadn’t spread to them, and the results came back negative! I met with both the surgeon and the reconstructive surgeon and they were very pleased with how it went. She’s resting now and will be released from the hospital tomorrow.
Thank you to everyone who has brought food, donated money, sent texts and well wishes, sent flowers, and everything in between. Lisa is so appreciative for the out pouring of support!

Good news...Lisa’s genetic test results came back and she doesn’t have any of the breast cancer genes! More good news, the insurance company is covering the cost of the double mastectomy! We were afraid they would only cover half so this is such a blessing. Her surgery is next week Tuesday, January 16th. Thank you for all the support you have all shown. It means so much to us! I will give more updates after surgery.

Thank you to everyone who has donated! The support has been tremendous and very appreciated. Lisa’s surgery is scheduled for January 16th. We are currently waiting for the test results from the genetic counseling appointment from a week ago to see if she had the BRCA gene.
Please keep Lisa in your thoughts and prayers as her surgery date nears. Thank you!
