Four years ago, Crystal Scott experienced weakness and trouble breathing. At first, she thought she had bronchitis. Then she suspected an asthma attack. Only after EMTs rushed her to the emergency department of a Maryland hospital did doctors diagnose her with kidney failure.

Now 44, Crystal has been in and out of the hospital and on and off dialysis as she and her doctors navigate the complications of End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). She attempted to go off dialysis this past year to see if her kidneys could function once again without assistance but that was not in the cards.  Her kidneys now function at 8% capacity and that function is declining each day.  

She will be go back on dialysis in June and is now on the waiting list for kidney donation.

The journey of finding a matching donor is long and tough.  But once she receives her kidney, her journey will only have just begun.  Insurance covers just 80% of her surgery (which is estimated to cost roughly $262,000).  And after a short period of time, insurance will no longer cover her required monthly medication.  Anti-rejection medication, blood pressure medication, and steroid treatment will cost roughly $5000 a month and will be needed for the rest of Crystal’s life.  On top of that, she will have co-pays for regular check-ups and procedures.

So we, Crystal’s family and friends, have decided to pull together a fund for our “Little Miss Transplant.”  Her whole life, Crystal has been a transplant.  She has moved from Rochester, NY to her beloved University of Iowa to her current home in our nation’s capital.  And all along the way she has transplanted herself into our hearts.

And now, as she embarks upon the most important transplant of her life, we want to envelop her with love and ease some of the financial burden and stress that lies before her.
