Lil Miss Transplant Fund 4 Crystal

$22,554 of $30,000 goal

Four years ago, Crystal Scott experienced weakness and trouble breathing. At first, she thought she had bronchitis. Then she suspected an asthma attack. Only after EMTs rushed her to the emergency department of a Maryland hospital did doctors diagnose her with kidney failure.

Now 44, Crystal has been in and out of the hospital and on and off dialysis as she and her doctors navigate the complications of End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). She attempted to go off dialysis this past year to see if her kidneys could function once again without assistance but that was not in the cards.  Her kidneys now function at 8% capacity and that function is declining each day.

She will be go back on dialysis in June and is now on the waiting list for kidney donation.

The journey of finding a matching donor is long and tough.  But once she receives her kidney, her journey will only have just begun.  Insurance covers just 80% of her surgery (which is estimated to cost roughly $262,000).  And after a short period of time, insurance will no longer cover her required monthly medication.  Anti-rejection medication, blood pressure medication, and steroid treatment will cost roughly $5000 a month and will be needed for the rest of Crystal’s life.  On top of that, she will have co-pays for regular check-ups and procedures.

So we, Crystal’s family and friends, have decided to pull together a fund for our “Little Miss Transplant.”  Her whole life, Crystal has been a transplant.  She has moved from Rochester, NY to her beloved University of Iowa to her current home in our nation’s capital.  And all along the way she has transplanted herself into our hearts.

And now, as she embarks upon the most important transplant of her life, we want to envelop her with love and ease some of the financial burden and stress that lies before her.

Thank you for any help you can provide!  And thank you for sharing this page far and wide (link below)!

Also, while she sits on the waiting list, Crystal is looking for a living donor for a new kidney.  Learn more at her website: www.lilmisstransplant.com

Considerable progress has been made. Crystal not only has gotten permission to give up the infection tube, but also the wound vac. This will enable her to restart her physical thearpy.!!. Doctors are pleased with her progress which has led to one clinic visit every other week. We still have weekly blood draws. Thanks be to God.

This past weekend was the 8th anniversary of Crystal's sudden heart and kidney failure. We call it her rebirthday as she was rushed to Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring Maryland. From then until December 22, 2018, she was on dialysis. (recently every night.) Today is the eight week anniversary of her receiving a new gift of life /a new kidney from some special family. We continue to be thankful to those who have continued their support which kept us over the last few years able to keep her near her medical support team. There are and have been so many blessings and so many open hearts. Healing is a slow steady heartbeat of progress. Many ask how are you able to endure this in your family. I have to reply , "the grace of God". Crystal has been given a certificate of success for the fighting back of an infection. Our visits to the hospital are now down to once a week with an additional blood draw. Her intake of medicines down to about 40 a day and falling. She hopes to be back to her home near DC within the next eight to twelve weeks. We will go from there in providing her supplemental financial care until she is able to pick up her own baton and fly down the road to a renewed life of self sustainment. Thanks again for all of your caring and prayers.

Update as promised; It doesn't seem possible that more than a month has passed since transplant surgery. What a marvel! . From home we continue to attend clinic at the hospital once a week, blood work twice a week and a host of visits from wound care specialists, nurses, physical thearpy, antibiotic infection specialists and the challenges with various machines to which Crystal is attached. Her attitude reamains uplifted. The kidney transplant specialists are trying to develop a forever plan of medication to keep the body from rejecting the kidney(which remains viable). We face all challenges prayerfully and with excitment. She continues to lose the weight gained post surgery by sticking to a high protein diet. We also learned that her blood pressure should be a little elevated to make sure blood is getting to the kidney. We continue to learn and commit to helping others who may be in similar circumstance. Be encouraged because there are many people dedicated to helping others. So many of our friends continue to send messages of encouragement and support. God Bless you all.

We promised to share this journey with all of Crystal's donors and friends. After receiving the transplant on Dec. 22, she has been back in the hospital twice. Once for a couple of days and now for the last two weeks. It is really wonderful how the transplant team keeps up with its new recipients . A visiting nurse came to see her two weeks ago. The nurse was concerned that the wound did not look okay to her. In addition our daughter shared with the nurse that she felt feverish although her temperature numbers did not indicate a problem. She knows that her regular body temp. indicates a fever at lower numbers than most people. NOTE :THE KIDNEY IS CONFIRMED TO BE FINE. However, she needed to have the wound reopened . The transplant doctors cleaned a pocket of infection and inserted a wound vac which facilitates healing. She came home This past Saturday, hallelujah. In addition to the wound vac , she has a line to continue antibiotic treatment for another two weeks. Thank you all for continued support until she can get back on her feet which we have told will be about a year.
