Lili's Harvard Summer Program

$436 of $1,350 goal

Raised by 11 people in 17 months
Our daughter Lili, a Junior in high school, was contacted by Harvard University to ask her to attend their Secondary School Program this Summer. We are incredibly proud of her. No one contacted them, but rather Harvard came looking for her.

She applied and was accepted! She also applied for financial aid, and has just received a substantial award of $5,800. However, the total to be paid by May 15th is $11,700. The remaining balance is $6,050. We have included enough in our goal amount here to help cover travel expenses and other needs while she is in Boston.

It is a seven-week program,  from June 17 to August 5. She will be taking two psychology classes for a total of 8 college credits. She will be able to apply these credits when she attends university after high school graduation. Harvard, Yale, and many other schools have already sent her letters encouraging her to send college applications.

Lili is a dedicated and conscientious student. This year she has dual-enrolled both semesters in her high school and at Schoolcraft Community College, taking a different psychology class each semester. She earned a 4.0 in last semester's class, and is looking to repeat that this semester.

Lili has consistently been number one in her class at Plymouth-Canton Educational Park , a high school with over 6000 students. Her freshman year she earned a 4.0. Last year she earned a 4.1 grade average, and this year she currently has a 4.0 gpa as well. In her first year she played the flute and was part of the marching band as they earned their way to Nationals, and as a sophomore and junior she has been an important member of the Electrical Group on the Plymouth-Canton Robotics team, Lightning Robotics.

Through her membership in Lightning Robotics, Lili has been part of Digital Divas , and has helped to bring STEM, technology and math to young girls, as well as being part of many other volunteer activities in the community.

Lili's junior year is her 6th year playing violin as a member of the orchestra, and she is now a member of the PCEP Symphony, their most advance group.

It would mean the world to Lili to be able to attend this program. It is the opportunity of a lifetime. She is deeply grateful to anyone able to make the sacrifice to help her take advantage of this opportunity.

In closing, I will share something Lili wrote herself while answering one of the application questions for the program.

"I think it is important to acknowledge that I have always had a strong desire to help others. No matter what future career I thought about pursuing in adulthood, it has always involved improving the lives of others. My parents taught me that not everyone is given the same opportunities and many people in this world will never get the chance to get a good education or have access to comprehensive healthcare. My main goal in life is to give back and to help those that are less fortunate whether that be in economic status, health, homelife, or all of the above. Growing up I always volunteered at churches, soup kitchens, and I helped the nuns at my grandmother's church with the afterschool program for poor children in the neighborhood. To be able to continue helping others in my future is my number one dream no matter what field I go into.

"Last year, while taking AP Psychology, I decided that I wanted to pursue psychology as a career. I believe that this path will help me reach my goal of creating a better world. It will allow me to help others reach their potential because once a person is being properly treated they can focus their energy on other aspects of their life. I think it is important for people to receive the treatment they need in order to become healthy and I hope to help find a way for all people to have access to the care they need. I believe that the Harvard Summer Program could be an important step on my journey to help the world around me. This opportunity would give me a chance to further my knowledge in the field and thus give me the chance to improve the quality of aid I am able to provide others. It would improve the work I do in everyday life by causing me to be even more sensitive to those around me and to be better equipped to help them. Getting a headstart on my educational journey is an excellent gift that will push me to do better in all aspects of my life especially concerning my future."

First of all, thank you to all those who have donated! I have changed the goal amount today due to an extremely generous and unexpected donation that did not come through gofundme. Thanks to everyone's help, Lili will be able to go to the Harvard Summer Program! Lili, Marta and I are incredibly grateful to all of you!

The remaining goal amount consists of travel expenses to Boston and back, and living expenses for Lili while she is there for 7 weeks.

She arrives in Boston on June 17th, and will be there through August 5th. Donations for the remaining goal can be sent from now through that entire period. While she is at Harvard, I will be making updates at least once a week to let you all know how she is doing.

Even if you're not able to donate, please feel free to share this. Thank you so much!!
