Learning Disability Scholarship

Don protégé
Please Donate to fund the “Lift Off” Scholarship, created to support the educational needs of students with learning disabilities.

Surviving high school can be a definite challenge for almost any student, but for an individual with a learning disability, the idea of completing high school, and later going on to achieving a college degree, can be daunting and seemingly impossible. As someone who has lived with a learning disability since my diagnosis in first grade, I know all too well the challenges that come along with it.

Within my own diagnosis, it was found that I had difficulty decoding language, which meant that I had trouble breaking down words, reading, writing, and spelling. Despite having support systems in school throughout my education, the ultimate goal was to complete high school and receive my diploma. For many students struggling with a learning disability, college is a pipe dream -- something we would aspire to, if only it didn’t come with more of the same torture and difficulties, along with less structured support from the education system. When I looked closer at our situation, I discovered that special education students, traditionally, receive counselling to help them succeed at high school, but not necessarily to continue on towards college. Unfortunately, this leaves many of my peers without the right preparation to apply for scholarships and colleges, and the ability to reach for our dreams is sometimes believed to be out of reach.

Upon graduating from high school, I worked multiple jobs to raise money to start my own college scholarship program to support high school students with learning differences achieve their goal of furthering their education. This past May, I was honored to present the first “Lift Off” Scholarship at the Petaluma Education Foundation ceremony to a Petaluma High School senior who despite countless obstacles had achieved his dream of going to college - this small act of validating the dream of another inspired me to keep the scholarship going.

As a college student myself, I need your help to continue funding the “Lift Off” Scholarship for college bound students. Your generous contribution, no matter the size, will ensure that the scholarship can continue to make a difference in the lives of future students with learning disabilities.

When you think of personalities such as Albert Einstein, Richard Branson, Steve Jobs, and Walt Disney, most people only see the successful, often legendary careers each one built in their field. Most people don’t realize that every single one of those highly motivated individuals suffered from one learning disability or another. Imagine if they hadn’t reached their goals! Every one of us is capable of changing the world -- some of us just need a bit of a boost to reach that first step!

Thank you in advance for your support and generous donations!
