Tumour Surgery GOAL REACHED!

Donation protected
Thanks to Seven's amazing supporters, we surpassed  our fundraising goal!!  ____________________________________________________
Poor Seven, her (former) owner planned to euthanize her because "they don't have time or money for her." She'd spent her entire life in the same Port Coquitlam home but was ignored and resented for a long time and literally would have been dead if not rescued in time.

Based on her bio on the dog rescue's site, I expected to pick up a blind, slow moving old lady but instead met a happy, energetic and loving young-at-heart dog who loves long walks and everyone she meets along the way.  Seven lost an eye as a pup but she doesn't let that bother her in the least, she's a total sweetie!

Unfortunately, Seven was never spayed and as as a result, she's developed enormous, painful mammary tumors that itch, weep and bleed constantly.  (Warning, graphic images below).  Her largest tumour dangles 6" below her body, feels like it weighs about 2 lbs, and flops around in a horrific way when she runs - something she loves to do. These types of tumours are typically slow-growing and entirely preventable but sadly, Seven has been badly neglected and didn't receive necessary medical attention.

We need to raise $4,800 for Seven's surgery to have these horrible tumours removed.   Funds raised will go directly to pay for surgery at Canada West and will not be used in any other way.

Miraculously, except for her tumours she's in great health (see x-rays) and therefore a good surgical candidate but the tumours must be removed before they suffer a bad bleed, grow into her chest wall, or metastasize.   Unfortunately, because the tumours are so large, her surgery is estimated to take 3 hours and it's expensive as you can see below in the itemized estimate.  I'm happy to send Seven's lab reports to anyone who would like to see them, but couldn't attach the .pdf to this page.

The veterinarians at Canada West are confident the surgery will be successful and if it's done soon, they say she's likely to recover quickly and live a full, healthy and happy life for another 5 years.   We're hopeful to book a surgery date for December.

As we see it, there are 3 options for Seven but only 1 choice:
1. Let the cancer take it's course:  watch her suffer the same neglect she's been forced to endure for years.  (obviously this would be cruel and inhumane)
2. Euthanasia: what a horrible waste of  an otherwise healthy, happy dog who deserves happiness after years of resentment and indifference.
3. Surgery: despite the cost, this is the only viable option.  Seven is a wonderful dog who deserves the best chance for a healthly, happy, full life.

THANK YOU for your support and for rescuing Seven.  We're incredibly grateful for your friendship and for helping us save our beautiful new family member.  Let's give Seven all the love and care she's done without.

Thank you,
Barb, Brian and Seven

UPDATE December 5: one week since surgery and Seven is healing well and in good spirits although she's super itchy where she has a bit of razor burn on her side from having hur fur shaved.  If she could talk, I think she'd complain about being limited to a single block for her walks but I don't think she has much discomfort.

Today is her last day of pain meds and she has a few more days of Clavamox antibiotics remaining.   As you can see from the photo below, she still has bruising (the dark red areas) but her incisions look clean and dry.

UPDATE November 30:  Surgery to spay and remove all of Seven's tumors was completed successfully on Monday, November 29 by Dr. Michael Kuzma at Canada West Veterinary Specialists.   On removal, the largest mass weighed in at 535grams (1.25lbs).   She'll spend 2 nights resting in hospital and will come home Thursday, December 1.  The before/after pictures from Canada West are below.  What an amazing difference!
