Shanda's Life Threatening Infection in Spain

Hello Everyone. My name is Judith Gray and I am Shanda Christian's mother. This money will be used for all of the many expenses incurred during her hospitalization in Barcelona, Spain. The donations will be processed to go immediately into her bank account so that Shanda immediately has access to the funds. She will be able to withdraw money as it is needed. Check each day for updates from me. She just had her fifth surgery and I will give you all the information that has been given to me.
All hearts are aching and prayers being put forth for Shanda Christian. On Shanda's last day in Barcelona, Spain, she contracted a life threatening infection. Doctors are not sure what bit her arm, but in a few days she was close to death with her kidneys beginning to shut down, her left arm enormously swollen, pain beyond words and high temperature causing deliriums. Her dear friend, Sharon, who was traveling with her, rushed her to University Hospital in Barcelona and within hours she was in surgery. Her blood was septic and huge blisters came up on her arm. Doctors got the sepsis under control with strong antibiotics. They stated this was a virulent and aggressive bacteria that usually kills. Now that they know what the bacteria is, they have begun the correct 'cocktail' of anti bacterial medicine.
They debrided the dead tissue from her arm in the first surgery and in the second and will continue with surgeries until all is removed. Doctors told us Shanda would have died in a day if she had not come to the hospital. Only 1/3 of patients with her level of infection have lived. It is only the beginning.
Not sure how many more surgeries she will endure and then skin transplants. The doctors stated they will do everything they can to save her arm. That was a shock to all of us. She will spend at least four days in ICU and then into a ward. Not sure for how long. The Social Medicine in Spain will not cover her since the expenses are so exorbitant. We desperately need any financial help you can send. I cannot even imagine how expensive this journey will be for us. This is a seriously urgent plea for help.
