Educate the children of Kahungwe, Zimbabwe

Funds go to FRIENDS OF KAHUNGWE ASSOCIATION

Friends of Kahungwe Association (FOKA) aim to raise funds to assist the children of Kahungwe, a remote Zimbabwean village with a safe place to study and to increase the chances for its children, particularly young girls to complete secondary schooling.

Kahungwe is a small remote village in the Zambezi Valley in the North East of Zimbabwe. There is a primary school in the village, but the older school children have to walk 10 km to the closest secondary school. Whilst to many tourists, observing African wildlife in its natural habitat is an exciting and memorable experience however in remote Zimbabwean villages, many school children, who encounter elephants, buffaloes or hyenas on their long walks home from schools think differently. To avoid close encounters children often leave school early missing out on supervised study time and access to school books in the library.  Once home, there are many chores to attend to, especially for the girls, by the time all the work is done and children are free to study it is dark and there is no electricity, nor school books at home.

In 2019 the association, led by Peter Muradzikwa (a son of Zimbabwe), successfully achieved its goal of providing the community with a library built next to the primary school (newspaper article). Volunteers from the community and the team from Australia joined together to complete the first stage of the building project and achieved their goal of providing a safe place to study for the children of the community.

The library is open to young and old and it has encouraged many adults in the community to return to complete their studies. So there is still plenty more to do to assist the community of Kahungwe.

The next phase of the project includes raising funds to support:
·       The installation of solar panels to power laptops and allow operation when its dark;
·       Additional furniture including desks, benches and more; and
·       Establishing a scholarship program to subsidise secondary school fees as these are often beyond the means of most of the villagers, with approximately one quarter of children dropping out as a result.

Friends of Kahungwe is a registered charity organisation in Australia and all donations over $2 will be eligible for tax deduction. All funds raised will be used to purchase materials for the library, additional learning materials for the students and support the scholarship program for secondary students.
