Furnace Update
Thanks to the generosity of our friends and allies, we have reached our primary goal: The Home for Hope have a functioning furnace! YOU made this happen. Your donations, your shares and your warmth are deeply felt.
But we're not done yet!
Well we survived the winter thanks to your incredible generosity our heating system was replaced.
As you can imagine the expense of a building this size with this many residents is astronomical.
As many of you may know, Deja (Director of the Home for Hope) and Sakina (the owner) have been supporting the shelter for 15 months out of their own pockets. While generous beyond measure, this expense is not sustainable. We need to ease their burden so that they can continue to serve as they continue to pursue public funding support.

Overview
The Home for Hope is the first and only homeless shelter in Pennsylvania specifically for LGBTQ individuals. It is a subsidiary of Divine Light, a group of addiction recovery homes in the Philadelphia area. To address the unique needs of the LGBTQ community, this specific shelter was founded in Sept., 2015 and is a 37 bed homeless shelter and recovery center in Philadelphia, PA for LGBTQ people who face a myriad of difficulties. "Recovery" can mean alcohol, drugs, abuse, trauma, sexual assault, or any other life event that may require a restoration/normalization period. We also have residents who have no recovery issues, but are simply homeless, often through family abandonment when they "came out."
At any given time, about 70% of the residents are transgender, with the other 30% being LGBQ. There is an urgent need for such facilities because LGBTQ people face homelessness , violence and murder at disproportionate rates versus the general population. Up to 40% of the homeless are LGBTQ, but up to 25% are physically/sexually assaulted in shelters by STAFF (ugh!) and other residents. One third of Trans people are turned away from shelters, entirely. The Home for Hope shelter is SAFE SPACE our community desperately needs!
Immediate Funding Need
We also have an industrial stove that has broken. We need to replace it. In the meantime, we're cooking on a small, used residential stove...tough stuff when you're feeding 40! Thanks to everyone for your kind support...let's keep the
Our monthly operating costs are covered by private donations and whatever the shelter management, themselves, can scrape together from their own funds. We have no surplus funds Any money collected (wouldn’t that be nice?!) will go to the shelter's general operating budget.
