Let’s help Red

You may not know Sean Novak, but you surely know Red. If you’ve shown up at a Detroit City event looking shy or uncertain, you’ve experienced his empathy; he probably was the first person to offer a beer, or a hug, or both. If you’ve shown up full of rage at the state of the world, you’ve gotten familiar with Red’s orientation toward righteousness; he likely got you thinking about how you could help. If you’re feeling loud and sarcastic and ready to throw some ‘bows for the Boys in Rouge, then you doubtless listen to Red’s 4:51 podcast.

In the first year at Keyworth, while the neighborhood kids in Hamtramck were still unsure about all these new faces pouring into town, Red organized the local kids into a rouge-and-gold cross between a flag corps and a conga line, snaking and dancing through the crowd on the loud side. That’s Red.

Now Red needs us. Mere months after moving into their first home, with his wife pregnant with their first child, they’ve learned that the furnace in the place was installed with almost malicious incompetence, venting carbon monoxide into the living spaces. The furnace technician who looked into the problem has told them the furnace is simply unusable without major modifications, changes which will cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $3,600. And it’s colder, implacably, week by week. Michigan is no place to try to squeak through without heat.

It is our hope that, once again, the Detroit City FC community can rise up and make the way straight for one of its own. To that end, we are asking three things:

Donations, naturally. The first and most important piece of this effort is getting Red the money he needs to make his home safe for his family.

Legal advice. If any attorneys are reading this, Red could use help figuring out whether there is a way to seek justice against the sellers who defrauded them.

HVAC advice. If furnaces are your jam, and you are reading this going “No no no, they just need to do [this other furnace thing],” we’d love to hear from you.

When we’ve needed Red, he’s been there for us. Let’s return the favor.
