Mary Beth’s Story
On Monday, June 18, 2018, Mary Beth woke up with a stiff neck. She took a couple of Advil and drove herself from the lakes to Fargo. When she safely made it to to Fargo she realized it was more than a stiff neck. She called her husband Doug and asked him to call 911. She was admitted to the hospital and it was discovered she had a spinal arteriovenous malformation (AVM). This is a very rare condition and it required surgery to correct. Her trauma initially included loss of feeling and movement in both legs and her left arm. Mary Beth started in the critical care unit at Essentia in Fargo and eventually transferred to Med Surgery. MaryBeth was amazed and so thankful for the amazing care she received there. Once she was stabilized she took Life Flight from there to Craig Hospital in Englewood Colorado where they specialize in spinal chord injury recovery and therapy. MaryBeth is making great progress daily. She is starting to regain some feeling and is able to move her left arm a bit more all the time. She has also been able to wiggle her toes and even her knees a bit. There is lots of hope that MaryBeth could make an almost full recovery after time. Craig has asked for a loved one to be with MaryBeth through her therapy process because healing improves with the support of loved ones. This of course can be very expensive and Doug and MaryBeth do not want to put a burden on their friends and loved ones. This site has been set up to help with the cost of the accommodations and transportation for care givers and help with all of those crazy and unexpected costs that inevitably occur in medical situations like MaryBeth's. We know that the community has been asking for ways that they can support MaryBeth and her family. Thank you so much to everyone for their love, prayers and support.
