Accelerating Climate Action in Kingston

Accelerating climate action in Kingston!

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." - Margaret Mead.

Citizens cannot rely on government alone to solve critically challenging issues. That’s why we’ve formed the Kingston Climate Hub: to provide non-partisan information on climate change, to engage with our community to take control of climate change in our own backyards, and to monitor government and industry actions and outcomes.

Everything we do, we are paying for out of our own pockets and with our own time. We need your help today to help us:

- research Kingston's emissions sources and develop local actions to make REAL change
- developing educational materials about climate change and action (e.g. impacts of legislation, etc.)
- community outreach and surveys to develop a climate action declaration

YOUR DONATION OF $50 OR MORE REGISTERS YOU FOR AN ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP TO THE KINGSTON CLIMATE HUB.

Our vision

The Kingston Climate Hub’s vision is “Zero by 2050” in keeping with the 2018 report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change for the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 45% by 2030 and to achieve carbon-neutrality or “net zero” by 2050.

Our mission

The Kingston Climate Hub brings together individuals, business and government by providing information and mobilizing the community to take action in support of Kingston’s goal to become Canada’s most sustainable city, meeting IPCC GHG emission targets.

Hello Supporters!

Since our last update, we have continued to make strides on climate action.

This past Tuesday, we launched a climate survey to get a better understanding of Kingstonians' beliefs about climate change and attitudes toward climate action. We hope to have a good response rate to guide our actions and to share with decision-makers.

If you haven't yet completed the survey, please do. It takes about 7 minutes. You can find it here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/52SYYTP.

Please also share it with your family, friends and colleagues.

The deadline is April 18 with a scheduled report release date on Earth Day.

Last week, we attended all three nights of council deliberations on their priorities for this term of council. We were successful in having GHG-reduction targets beyond City operations (i.e. for all of Kingston) added in.

If you haven't yet checked out our website, you will find lots of great information there including a calendar of local actions, and a breakdown of some of the City's strategies and our take on the included climate actions. You can also sign up for our e-newsletter to stay in-the-loop on climate news.

Thank you once again for your generous support.

Warm regards,

Colleen and Emily

Update #1

Hello wonderful supporters!

Since launching on Feb. 9, we have had a whirlwind of activity. We've:
- launched our website that includes events from other climate groups in Kingston
- given 2 presentations at the recent Footprint conference and at Queen's
- promoted a city council survey and paid for ads to encourage Kingstonians to complete survey that to ensure that climate change becomes a top priority for this term of council.
- attended a council open house, speaking to most of the councillors and the mayor about the need for serious climate action.
- attended the council meeting following the open house when the councillors voted to participate in the Global Covenant of Mayors on Climate and Energy (GCoM). The resolution is worrisome as it does not set the groundwork for new, more aggressive targets for Kingston, so we then
- attended the first meeting of this council's Kingston Environmental Advisory Forum (the group of experts that reports to the municipal Environment, Transportation, Infrastructure and Planning Committee and provides advice to all committees) and asked questions about targets for the city's participation in the global group. The responses were vague but we got their attention.
- met with Sustainable Kingston to hear about its work and upcoming actions. We hope this will be a fruitful partnership. (As with any group that we connect with, we will work with them as long as they are taking serious action to -- at a minimum -- meet the UN's climate emissions targets. If they are not, we will continue our work and not be held back.)
- grown - and continue to grow - our social media account through organic outreach and paid ads

Coming up:
- On Tuesday, March 5, we will be a delegation at council to support a motion going forward to declare a climate emergency in Kingston. Our support will be contingent upon the declaration being followed quickly by aggressive targets and a plan of action. Please attend to show your support.
- We are supporting the Divest Queen's and QBACC - Queen's Backing Action on Climate Change Climate Strike on March 15. Please join in.
- We are requesting meetings with city councillors to share our agenda and build support.
- We have a very special announcement coming soon!

As you can imagine, all of this takes a lot of time and money. That's why we need your help. Please share our fundraising campaign with your family and friends. We will put every dollar to very good use.
