Pippin & Tobi's Fight with 'Lepto'

Donation protected
On Friday, September 30th I took two of my three dogs to the Vet for a check up. Tobi, our dachshund, refused to eat food or move and Pippin, our Great Dane/Lab mix, wouldn't stop vomiting. It was just a check up but blood tests revealed their white blood cell counts to be lower than normal so they stayed the weekend.

This was taken the day I dropped him off at the Vet.

The following Monday I got a call that Tobi was doing better and I could take him home but Pippin couldn't stomach water or medicine without throwing up so he would just have to stay a few more days. They sounded so calm so I picked Tobi up and waited.

Tuesday, October 4th was a day I will never forget. The Vet had called me that morning to tell me that they suspected the virus that showed up in the blood test to be Leptospirosis, a terrible disease that dogs can contract from drinking from standing water in your backyard, at the dog park or even on a walk. Pippin's eyes had turned yellow and his charts showed some concern but they were changing his antibiotics, no worries.

I was called 5 hours later with the news that our beautiful Pippin had passed away from sudden liver failure. All I can remember from that phone call was crying at the vet and begging her "Are you sure? Are you sure?" I had to hang up until I could breath again.

In hindsight, there is so much I wish I had done. There is a vaccine for Lepto but it isn't suggested much because it can have bad allergic reactions. I never knew about it.

Because of Lepto my family lost so much. He was our baby, he was barely a year and a half old. Pippin was so strong and happy. He would leap through the house chasing toys, knocking things over with his oversized paws that were just too big for his growing body. He was so awkward and energetic and loving. We loved him so much and it still hurts so bad just to write this.

We just got the vet bill today. Between the overnight hospitalizations, the many different medications for both Tobi & Pippin (And our Dachshund, Yogi, at home as a preventative) and all the blood tests... the bill is just under $2,500. The people at my vet are wonderful people and with everything that has happened they are giving me three months to pay it.

The problem is that my Husband and I aren't very wealthy; we're just over the poverty line. We've never had lots of money but we have made sure our dogs have never had to suffer because of it. Any donation made on behalf of our beloved boys is so very much appreciated. Any extra we receive will be donated back to the No-Kill Shelter that we adopted Pippin from. We hope to try to save more lives in honor of his.

We thank each and every one of you so much. We hope that after reading this you will be with those you care about the most and let them know how much you love them. The only thing I regret is not being able to be with Pippin when he passed on.

Please help share Pippin's story and spread awareness about this horrible disease.

Thank you so much again.
