Legacy Gardens

Please help us transform this ashram land into a vibrant, rich, legacy of sharing well being through sharing food.

With your help, Legacy Gardens will be operating in Espanola, NM, USA providing high quality organic produce, grown on the farm and in 3 adjacent greenhouses, for local use, sale, and donation to the broader northern New Mexico community.

Our research indicates that the local demand for organic produce is significantly higher than the current supply.  Legacy Garden will require an initial investment of $100,000, to build infrastructure, and cover initial operations.  We will be moving 3 commercial greenhouses to the adjacent farmland, and submerging them 4' for geothermal insulation. We will then outfit the center greenhouse with an aquaponics system. The majority of the funds will be used for this construction project. The rest of the funds will be used to acquire organic and native seeds, organic fertilizer, maintain farm equipment, and build smaller infrastructures. Our plan is to implement as many energy efficient technologies as possible and offer classes to public schools and private groups as a model of modern sustainable agricultural techniques. We want to share the vision of sustainability with the future generations.

The Gardens will be professionally managed and operated by trained horticulturists John and Leah York, also providing jobs for local community members, volunteers, and Seva Sadhana sevadars. The Garden will use the latest technology of organic gardening, aquaponic crop farming and greenhouse vertical growing to produce high density crop yields, utilizing a year round growing cycle, integrated pest management, fast crop rotation, reduced water usage systems. Photovoltaic-powered air circulation will keep the facility cool in the summer and warm in the winter, maintaining optimal growing environments year round. We will have a Research and Development department directed by Leah York in order to continue to achieve the best results with soil and crop health, and have Operations Management and strategic planning directed by John York to make sure the overall operations are running efficiently and successfully.

We will happily provide fresh produce and products to local farm to table initiatives and restaurants, also the Ashram Langar Kitchen, the annual Summer Solstice Sadhana Celebration in Espanola, NM, local farmers’ markets, natural food groceries, and food co-ops. We will also be donating fresh produce to victims of natural disasters, strengthening food security in the community when a natural disaster occurs as well as regular support throughout the year through the Food for Kids Program which is a program that provides fresh and easy to prepare foods for children in need and delivers them direct to the local school district.

We are looking to fund this project by Sept. 1, 2018 so that we can begin construction and have the greenhouses operational for the planting of winter crops.  This condensed timeline will allow the project to generate income within months of implementation, becoming profitable in the first year of operation and allowing the farm to grow and create more jobs.

We would be grateful for the opportunity to serve this community by being a source of organic produce and products, and also provide much needed fresh food & products for the community in need, especially the Food for Kids program.
