Leaders are Readers Gift of Reading

Donation protected

Our 2018 kick off events is in September for the BACK TO SCHOOL season, and our goal is to “GIFT” over 500 books to children in the San Francisco Bay Area by the end of the year.

Gifting Knowledge is the Leaders are Readers mission, and WE NEED YOUR HELP to reach our goal.

All contribution amounts are welcome and appreciated, and donors who give $35 and above will be listed (optional) on the thank you page in our upcoming book series.

Statistics suggest that young males in our urban communities who do not read by 3rd grade are more likely to pursue lifestyles that lead to prison sentences.

Help us turn this around for children!

Please share this opportunity for our children with your networks.  Thank you in advance for your generous contribution and expressed love and support for our babies.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Leaders are Readers founder Ms. Mykah Montgomery is a single mother and author who passionately advocates for child literacy.  She firmly believes that leaders are readers and “gifts” books to children in underserved communities via the “Gift of Reading” campaign she spearheaded in Oakland, CA. Mykah has made available inspirational resources that encourage children to enjoy reading with The Little Girl Who Wanted a Tail, (its theme song DIFFERENT), and Isaiah Wants to Read.  Kids from pre-k to 3rd grade are RAVING about them and the life lessons they provide! The Leaders are Readers “Gift of Reading” campaign puts these books that promote a love for reading, a love for self and others (to help eradicate bullying), and entrepreneurship in the hands of children in our communities.

Mykah’s Leaders are Readers Gift of Reading Campaign has “gifted” hundreds of books with the help of sponsors like you.  “It Takes a Village” and we need your help to continue this effort, and provide children’s books and resources to our children pre-k to 3rd grade.  No donation is too small, and is greatly appreciated.

GOALS

Books will be “gifted” to: Individual children / Schools / Libraries

Whereas, $3,000 will help us on a small scale - we aim to exceed this number!

$8,000 will allow us to “gift” books and music, in English, that promote a love of self and others (to help eradicate bullying), a love for reading, and entrepreneurship.

$10,000 - allows us to “gift” books in English and Spanish to children in the Oakland Bay Area.

$15,000 will allow us to “gift” MORE books in English and Spanish to underserved children in the Oakland Bay Area.

$20,000 – will allow us to “gift” EVEN MORE books, and provide additional multi-lingual resources not limited to English and Spanish.

All of our children are precious, and the resources we provide are inclusive and representative of all children.

 About the Books

Mykah Montgomery, as mother to Mylaan, her precocious and shy adolescent daughter, came into the knowledge that along with day to day life lessons is the challenge of social acceptance. Mylaan fancied tails from 4-8 years of age—all tails-- and her fascination with them prompted her mother to share their story.
The Little Girl Who Wanted a Tail is a book about just that.
Coupled with an original song composed by Montgomery, their desire is to address and eradicate the feeling of being “different” despite any childhood preoccupations and pastimes, thus the title of their single, “DIFFERENT”.  See music video below.

Isaiah Wants to Read is a book that encourages children, especially young boys, to enjoy reading. An excerpt from the book reads, “Why does Isaiah like to read? I know other kids who don’t feel the need. Read a book, they’d say. Uh-uh, no way! They’d rather use video games, or go outside and play. Sure, Isaiah likes video games, and he likes to play, but reading is even more fun, he’d say. Reading should not feel like a punishment or something you have to do. It can be fun and exciting when you find books that were made just for you.”
