Support the Child of a Fallen Hero

Donation protected
Dear Friends and Family,

We are asking for your support this Veteran's Day on behalf of a veteran and dear friend who cannot ask for it himself. Steve Hilbert was a highly decorated Marine, loving father, and future husband to his beloved girlfriend. Despite his valiant efforts in pursuing treatment, Steve succumbed to the unseen wounds of war on October 16th, 2016. Please help us to ensure that his 3-month old son, Layton Michael Hilbert, and Layton’s working mother, Liza, are supported in a manner fitting of a fallen hero’s family by contributing to the Layton Michael Hilbert trust.

Steve and Liza welcome Layton Michael Hilbert into the world.

Steve Hilbert heroically served our country over 2 combat deployments to both Iraq and Afghanistan. He was a consummate professional who put everything on the line, time after time, for our country and his fellow Marines. Steve’s heroic actions saved the lives and limbs of several other Marines and consistently demonstrated his unyielding dedication and courage. Ever modest and unassuming, he quietly accepted medals for both combat valor and decisive actions under fire without ever boasting or broadcasting his heroism. Steve was described by companions as “one of the nicest guys" they’d ever met. He was deeply loved by his friends and family and by the Marines, British and Estonian forces he served with in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Like many veterans, Steve suffered enormous losses during his two combat tours overseas and after leaving the service. He lived with images and experiences it is difficult for many of us to imagine. His three month old, Layton Michael Hilbert, is named for two of his former squad members who were both killed in action on the same day in Afghanistan.

Steve quietly suffered immensely from the losses and stresses of his service. He showed great courage and resolve in seeking help from the VA, as his struggles with depression and unrelenting nightmares associated with his service worsened. Despite his best attempts with treatment and medication to continue to be there for his young family, Steve ultimately took his life on October 16th, 2016. Steve was not alone in his struggles. Over a dozen Marines who served in Steve’s unit on the same tours have taken their lives since 2009; including Steve’s former roommate and fellow Scout/Sniper, Clay Hunt.  Steve was a strong, courageous man, and those who knew Steve know that he fought as hard as anyone could in his struggles with the unseen wounds of war.

As we feel the pain of Steve’s loss, and the sense that we, as his brothers in war, could not carry Steve through his battle as he carried us through ours, we ask your support in providing Steve’s 3-month old son, Layton, and love of his life and mother of his son, Liza, with the financial security and educational opportunity befitting the family of a combat veteran who honorably served our country.

We hope you join the veterans of the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines in taking the opportunity to show our country’s steadfast commitment to its veterans and their families by contributing to the trust established for Layton Michael Hilbert by his grandfather. Named for 3 of our country’s finest fallen veterans, including his father, supporting Layton Michael Hilbert on this Veteran's Day, both symbolically and substantially embodies our gratitude for the service of our veterans and the immense sacrifices of their families.
