Layla's Cause

Donation protected

Meet little Layla, she was born with a rare liver disease called Biliary Artesian.
Biliary atresia is a rare disease of the liver and bile ducts that occurs in 1 in 18,000 infants.
Cells within the liver produce liquid called bile. Bile helps to digest fat. It also carries waste products from the liver to the intestines for excretion.
This network of channels and ducts is called the biliary system. When the biliary system is working the way it should, it lets the bile drain from the liver into the intestines.
When a baby has biliary atresia, bile flow from the liver to the gallbladder is blocked. This causes the bile to be trapped inside the liver, quickly causing damage and scarring of the liver cells (cirrhosis), and eventually liver failure.

At 7 weeks old Layla had a Kasai procedure, that's when they attach a loop of the small intestine to the liver, to act as new ducts to move the bile awayy and into the intestine to remove it. It would take 6-8 weeks to find out if it worked and unfortunately it didn't. Layla is now waiting on word about having liver transplant to save her little life.
Since then, Layla has been in the RCH & MCH hospital more then she has been out. She currently is recovering from an infection at the RCH. Due to all this, her little body isn't working properly, she isn't gaining weight and has to have a nasal gastric tube in to be fed. She's still the size of a newborn at 4 months old. On top of all this, Aleisha's partner Andrew was suffering from an injuried back that happened 2 years ago, he has just had spinal surgery to help correct/ease the pain. This means more time off work for him as he recovers. They are currently were only living on one wage and now while Andrew is recovering life will be even harder. These two parents are the best people and they deserve all the help they can get. Please help anyway you can! We will give you update on Layla's condition and photos too!
