Lawrence Museum's New Shed

Donation protected
Lawrence Museum is in the former 2NR radio transmitting station in Lawrence NSW. The museum was officially opened in 2004, it is  operated and funded entirely by volunteer staff. It is not funded by government or local council. The success of the museum and support from the community and donations to the  museum collection now requires more space to be able to preserve, maintain and display the items for present and future generations to appreciate.

The success of the museum to date is the result of many years of work by the volunteer committee.

Most of the  committee members are now in their later years, and although still full of enthusiasm to save the history of the area, are limited with current facilities. If  the Museum cannot take some of the local historical outdoor farming & fishing implements, they will no doubt be consigned to the rubbish tip.

The museum recives many donations of historical significance such as the last flood boat in NSW, which we have in our collection. This was going to burned if the museum did not take it.

Recently we were looking for original timber to repair an old cane trolley & discovered five had had just been destroyed.

The museum committee plans to build a new shed, the style is in keeping with the original building, to enable more exhibits to be maintained and  displayed in  a weatherproof setting.  We are receiving more donations of items of significant historical interest which require weatherproof storage and also are able to be diplayed and enjoyed by visitors. It will also provide sufficient space for neccessary repair and maintenenance work.

The first stage of the shed will be 12m x 14m, with an allowance of 2 x 12m x 4 either side for future extensions. It will comprise a concrete slab, timber poles and trusses and yellow tongue flooring. It will have  corrugated iron roof and walls , recycled timber doors & windows. We are also researching possible  suitable secondhand materials.

Because of the wonderful fundraising efforts of the museum volunteers over the years, we have enough  to pay for the plans to be drawn up, earthworks to be completed and the concrete slab to be poured. A number of members have rural properties and will donate trees, which we will fell and mill ourselves to contribute to the frame work.

Clarence Valley Council is expected to waive the development fee application , as they have in the past for othersmaller projects.

All of the labour will be undertaken by the volunteers.

You can donate any sum you like, it all adds up. Your donation will help pay for corrugated iron, flooring, recycled timber and windows,  & light fittings.

Thank you for your donation.  The completion of the shed will enable us to preserve our local history for future generations.
