Our friend, Laurie Karma is a woman who loves Halloween, the Portland Winterhawks, dancing, bowling, travelling, shopping and spending time with family and friends. Laurie was officially diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, in May 2018. By January, she was no longer able to work, and as of now, she is confined to a wheel chair.
She is facing this challenge with joy as ALS robs her of her physical independence. She meets each new day with a good spirit, attitude, laughter, prayer and yes, sometimes there are tears. It is remarkable to watch her as she adjusts and finds new ways to function. Tony (Bobby) Klein is right by her side, helping her through each day and every stage of the life they share together.
She needs an ALS-specialized bed with a mattress that can turn her automatically, vibration therapy to help with breathing issues, and is able to sit into a chair position to make transfers as easy as possible. Laurie would be able to utilize the different actions independently.
All funds raised will be used to help Laurie stay at home with as much independence as possible. The funds will go directly to Laurie to purchase the bed and whatever else she may need.
