Laura's VESA Africa Volunteer Fund
Don protégé
Hi! Laura here,
I am currently raising money to fund my volunteering experience in South Africa and Swaziland for July 2017.
I have always involved myself with charity fundraising and voluntary work in the past for UK based and Indonesian charities and would like to take this next opportunity to expand my voluntary work, while enjoying incredible moments in some of the most beautiful and remote parts of the world.
The Volunteer Eco Students Abroad program (VESA) have granted me with a place to take part in their voluntary work in a completely different continent I have yet to explore, and help make a genuine change to a community in Africa.
I have wanted to find more ways to utilise my time over the lengthy summer period where I could be working or volunteering for a great cause as I love to put myself out there to volunteer and raise money for different charities already.
Of course, the option to travel and indulge in a new culture was always inviting. This was an opportunity I could not look past.
I get the amazing chance to work with and teach English to children at primary schools in the St Lucia area, teaching them about basic sanitation, hygiene and nutrition through games and activities.

I also get the exciting opportunity to work within the National Parks Authority and local wildlife refuges in areas of conservation for the preservation of cheetahs, leopards and lynx for their rehabilitation, breeding and release, and also preparing their food and feeding the cats. The volunteering experience also allows me to get involved with the capture and release of crocodiles and observation and counting their eggs. I also get to feed them and clean the enclosures of the smaller crocs and alligators.

How often do you hear a person getting close contact time with lynx? (Apart from at Christmas with the rest of the bathroom sets you or a family member received.)
If you didn’t get that joke, I apologise for my weak humour and let’s move swiftly onto what you want to know…
What your donation is for:
·Renovations and revitalising facilities within primary schools such as libraries with new paint and provision of new play equipment for the children
· All volunteer materials and local builders/assistants
· Construction of bathrooms, kitchens, and water catchements, as well as homes for family locals that require great assistance
· Building and installing sustainable farming units, which allow for families and, in particular, single mothers to start a micro-business to gain employment and income for their family
· Constructing new enclosures for the breeding pairs of Cheetahs, Leopards and Lynx
· The small cost of accommodation for myself while out there for 2 weeks, along with 3 simple meals a day + flight
I will need these funds as soon as possible, deadline being the end of May 2017.
Alongside my GoFundMe account I am currently working two part-time jobs and will be setting up food stalls with my friend Danielle at my university who is also participating in this VESA abroad trip (travelling to South-East Asia in Laos to carry out similar voluntary work and we will split these funds) to raise money for this trip.
This work I will do means a lot to me, being able to give back to a community that otherwise would not be able to gain help regularly, and for animals that may have been helpless without the aid of myself and the other volunteers at VESA.
I would be very grateful if you took the time to make a donation, however small it may be as it will really help me reach my goal and raise money to put into the work I will be doing there.
It would be a satisfying donation to a cause that does so much in these different parts of the world where you could be helping make that positive change
Also, I would just like to say YOU SHOULD DO IT TOO!
Go abroad, go volunteer with VESA as they grant you with the opportunity to travel to either South Africa, South America, South-East Asia or Fiji Islands.
Each opportunity has its own set of voluntary work and communities that will be thankful for our help.
Any one, any age can do this so why don’t you sign up for the next trip this year or in 2018?
More information about my trip and the other fantastic opportunities VESA have can be found on their website:
http://www.vesabroad.co.uk/
And if not them, there are plenty of volunteering programmes out there or if you’re not too keen on going abroad there is so much in the UK you can do (although an opportunity to take time out and give back to the community in a completely different culture would be highly rewarding!
Any questions? Please feel free to contact me at any time
Get involved, help others and make a change to this world!
Thank you so much for your consideration,
Laura :)
