Launch Pad Workshop

Donation protected
Launch Pad is a workshop for established writers held annually at the University of Wyoming in Laramie, WY. The workshop is a “crash course” in modern astronomy taught through lectures, discussion, and observations through the University of Wyoming’s telescopes. Previous funding for Launch Pad has been provided by grants from NASA, the National Science Foundation, Uwingu, and generous contributions from individual donors. The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA) continues to be a strong supporter.

Making up shortcomings in funding will ensure Launch Pad will not have to cut down on the number of participants or ask them to supplement the funding with an additional tuition request.

100% of donations go directly toward workshop costs. Instructors volunteer their time, and the University of Wyoming provides class space free of charge.

Past attendees have included Campbell Award-winning authors Jay Lake and Mary Robinette Kowal, Hugo and Nebula winners Nancy Kress, Robert J. Sawyer, Ann Leckie, Hugo winner David D. Levine, science comedian Brian Malow, and award-winning editor Ellen Datlow.

Launch Pad was created by science fiction author, astronomer, and University of Wyoming professors Mike Brotherton, PhD, and Jim Verley, PhD. Christian Ready, an astronomer whose work experience includes the Hubble Space Telescope and popular public speaker has been a regular instructor at Launch Pad since 2012.
