Last Wish

“My Mommy is my best friend. She’s been through a lot of hard stuff, though.  She developed a neuroendocrine disease in the form of a brain tumor. She’s had eleven surgeries in the past decade and it has messed her up. She is now legally blind and suffers from advanced rheumatoid arthritis in her spine, making it difficult to walk. When my Mommy drops something, I pick it up for her because when she bends over, she also gets frequent and dramatic nosebleeds. She also suffers from extreme memory loss, confusion, and occasional mini-strokes. Through all this, my Mommy remains positive and tries to stay active and productive as best she can. I love my Mommy.”

Holly helps her “Mommy” and human partner, Crystle, 29, by retrieving items, being her guide, performing alert tasks, bracing for support, and carrying Crystle’s many medications in her service vest. As Crystle says, “Holly is my hero.” The two are inseparable.

Crystle’s lifelong dream is to see America. She, along with best friend and helper, Mel, has been planning a trip across the country to visit the places that, so far, she has only seen on TV. When asked about her plans, Crystle paused and said, “This is something I need to do. I have to be honest with myself; my health is not going to get better. I need to do something before it deteriorates further. I travel to learn and I travel to grow. I think when we get back, we’ll be different people…we’ll be better people. ”
