Large Animal Emergency Rescue Unit

Tax deductible

Least Resistance Training Concepts (LRTC) is in the process of acquiring additional equipment so we can offer Technical Large Animal Emergency Rescue (TLAER) service to cover the US-395 corridor.
The closest and only Technical Large Animal Emergency Rescue team is located in Lyon County and is a least a hour away to assisting in any emergency in the Douglas County and South Carson area. A hour can be the difference between life and death.
By reconstructing "Rescue Unit 1" in this area we will be able to provide assistance to our local emergency responder agencies whenever large animals are involved.

The services we provide to animals in need of emergency rescuing is important to any community. Douglas County is a large agriculture community with many horse owners, enthusiast and ranchers.

Some of the technical large animal emergency rescues that LRTC has provided consist of canyon rescues, lake rescues, down horses, wild horses stuck in fences, neglect rescues, shooting victims, orphaned range foals, range horses hit by cars, injured wild horses, abandoned horses at large, sick and weak domestic horses, domestic horses involved in trail riding accidents, serious highway accidents involving livestock trailers carrying livestock.

The decommissioning of the state’s “Rescue 1” response unit has left a significant gap in coverage in this area. Presently the closest (and only) technical large animal rescue unit is based in Lyon county.

While Washoe Regional Animal Services has some large animal capabilities, technical large animal rescue is typically carried out by volunteers. As a practical matter, rescue equipment needs to be located close to the volunteers to avoid excessive delays in deployment when emergencies occur.

A number of capable volunteers are available in Douglas County; however, we need locally based equipment in order to respond safely and be effective for incidents in Douglas County and other nearby counties.

Effective large animal emergency rescue is a product of collaboration between the state, local agencies and nongovernmental organizations.

It is a framework that provides protection for animals, their owners and public safety personnel.

It begins with dedicated people, cooperation between groups, agencies and a plan.

It succeeds through training and skills development of:
·        Properly transporting downed animals
·        Safely containing loose animals
·        Proper extrication techniques
·        Proper application of slings and lifting

Resulting in a high level of performance when it counts.

Some of the emergencies situations we are called out for are wide area emergencies, recreational accidents and injured animals.

Acquisition of appropriate tools and equipment coupled with learning how to properly use them is important to the success of bringing a Technical Large Animal Emergency Unit to our valley and surrounding areas.

Below is a list of the tools and equipment that are needed for us to get a rescue unit equipped and ready for service in the Douglas County and surrounding areas.

We have listed them in the order of importance along with the cost.
