LARA OLOWOOKERE CANCER CENTER

In the summer of 2014, I lost my dear mother to a metastatic endometrial carcinoma (uterine cancer) which was not detected early enough to treat. When she had unbearable pains, various tests were carried out both in Nigeria and South Africa but the doctors found nothing. On getting to the UK, my mother was diagnosed with a stage 4 cancer to my amazement.

I witnessed her go through excruciating pains and anguish. Strings of sleepless nights and uncontrollable tears dripping down her cheeks. Significant weight loss and sudden lack of appetite in a very short time. I felt very helpless as I wished to take her pains away forever if I could.

After her demise, I decided to set up a charity to cater for cancer patients and to improve their quality of life in Africa. A large chunk of her estates have been redirected to this cause and we are genuinely in need of more funds as we aim to set up an ultra-modern integrated cancer center in Nigeria.

In recent years, a clinical survey from the world health organisation (W.H.O) shows that Nigeria has the highest cancer death rate in Africa. Over 10,000 cancer deaths are recorded annually while 250,000 new cases are recorded yearly. It is very worrisome that these statistics have been on a steady increase and could only get worse over time. Cancer has become a ticking-time bomb of the 21st century.

Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa, has an estimated 180 million people. The whole country also has one functional radiotherapy machine. This number is grossly inefficient, as we seek to ease the pain of cancer patients.

We need to bring in experts and a lot of volunteers for this great project. We need to power the center on round the clock bases. We also need a PET CT, a MAMMOGRAPHY machine and an Ultrasound scan Machine. Using what is left of her estate, we have acquired a 1.5 hectares of land and constructed the first phase of the L.O.C.C. on another two plots of land. You can see images here.

The official Lunch of the LARA OLOWOOKERE CANCER CENTER (LOCC) is set for August 2017 and we need all the help we can get. We believe that we will be giving a new lease of life to the patients and their loved ones through this project. Please, tell your friends to tell their friends to donate, because they will be putting smiles on a face and making their life worth living.

LOCC: TRANSFORMIMG LIVES, RENEWING HOPES.
