Lakou Mizik - Tour 2017
As you may know, Lakou Mizik has plans to once again bring our music and culture to communities across North America this Spring and Summer. Our breathless road takes us from Portland, ME to New Orleans, LA (JazzFest!) all the way to Boonville, CA and Edmonton, Canada. Lakou Mizik was started as a way to share Haitian culture and to form positive connections with the wider worlds. To be invited to play music for audiences outside of Haiti is such and honor and helps us fulfill this original dream.
Last summer during our first tour, we were so appreciative of all of your generosity and warmth and we truly felt part of your extended families. We are excited to come back and share more of our music. But it's not an easy road - and unfortunately, the economic realities are such that without support we simply can't afford to go out on tour.
So, we are turning to you, our friends (old and new), our families and our fans to ask, humbly, for your help. We need to raise $6,000 in advance of our upcoming tour to pay for flights and US visas for all 9 band members.
Flights: 9 x $500 (approx) = $4500
Visas: 9 x $190 = $1710
Any help that you may be able to offer, no matter the amount, will be a blessing. Every little bit will go directly to these costs and will be crucial in in our efforts to bring our music and our Haitian culture directly to you!
Music creates bridges and breaks down the walls of culture, religion and language. If you've had a chance to see Lakou Mizik on stage, hopefully you've already seen this in action - we feel it everywhere we go. The way the world is today, these connective, cultural bridges are important than ever and we are doing our best to connect with as many people as possible.
In Haitian Kreyol there's an expression - "Men anpil chay pa lou" - you may know it as "many hands make light work." This is the spirit that we work with in Haiti - this is the spirit of the Lakou - resources are always scarce but we take care of each other with the means we have. If you are able to help us we promise to bring you our music, our culture, our positive spirit all summer long!
If you'd like to donate but prefer to make a tax-deductible donation you can do so through our long time Charitable partner CARAVAAN . Make a tax-deductible donation to Lakou Mizik HERE ( http://caravaan.org/donate/). Make sure to clink the "Donate to Lakou Mizik" link.
Thank you so much for your support!

With the help of a bunch of amazing friends, family, fans and a community of folks who just support the idea that sharing and connecting through culture makes the world a better place - we reached our goal of $6,000!
Wow. Thank you all!
As of today the band has visas in hand. They've finished their last rehearsal and will be boarding a flight bound for Portland, Maine tomorrow. It's going to be a hectic but wonderful few weeks road tripping from North Haven, Maine to New Orleans for Jazz Fest. We can't wait!
I'm bursting with appreciation for all of you - for donating, for sharing, for cheering us on and for just putting up with all these posts and emails!
Thank you! Mesi Anpil!
I'm attaching this photo from last year's tour when the band visited the King Center in Burlington VT. The band was tired - the kids were crazy and not paying any attention. BUT when the drums kicked in and the Rara Horns started up - it became the best cross cultural dance party ever! I can't wait for more of these special musical moments - it's why we do what we do.
We we're able to borrow some money to pay for the flights - BUT it would be amazing if we could reach the $6000 so that this tour can be the great success for all involved that it should be. Thank you for helping with a last push on this campaign.
We were very thrilled to have a visit from Lakou fan and campaign supporter @tobysimon and her great crew of women exploring the country. Haiti needs more tourists like this who get a chance to see beyond the way the country is portrayed in the media - and appreciate it's natural beauty and amazing culture - from music to dance to art and food. We like to see Lakou Mizik as ambassadors for this side of Haiti going out in the world to try to tempt people to come visit and experience Haiti for themselves.
We are at $3270 of our $6000 tour fundraising goal. Time is ticking - we need to buy tickets for our flights this week. If there's anything you can do to help our campaign - now would be a wonderful time to do it!
Thank you for all! Zach and Lakou Mizik
Also need to send a very special shout out to friends and Lakou fans Jon Bougher and Scott Mapes who each sent a second round of donations to bring this campaign past the 50% mark! From the whole Lakou Mizik family - THANK YOU! MESI ANPIL!
If we made it this far - I know we can make it across the $6,000 finish line!
With endless respect and appreciation. Zach and Lakou
