Lacey's Fight Against AFM
This is my niece, Lacey. She is a beautiful, smart 12 year old girl who has a heart of gold. She loves singing, friends, music, art, animals, and living life. Lacey was living a normal life, like any other 12 year old girl, until her world was turned upside down .
This all started with a couple of unexplained falls at school, followed by fever and weakness. Her pediatrician suspected meningitis and sent her to the ER immediately. Her symptoms only got worse from there.
She declined rapidly and was transported to the PICU and put on a ventilator. Her MRI showed inflammation from her brain all the way down to her spinal cord and she was showing no reflex response. She was finally diagnosed with Acute Flaccid Myelitis (AFM).
AFM is a polio-like disease that causes inflammation of the spine, affects the nervous system, causes muscle weakness/paralysis, and other physical symptoms. According to the CDC there have been 191 confirmed cases from August 2014 to August 2016. Only 3 of the 191 diagnosed have fully recovered. Lacey's doctors say this is the worst case they have seen, but we are praying that Lacey will be the 4th to fully recover!
My sister, Heather, is a single mom who works full time to provide for her 5 children, and has been by Lacey's side since she was admitted. Heather is doing everything she can to help Lacey through this, but desperately needs financial support. Lacey still cannot breathe on her own and can only wiggle her toes, squeeze her hands, and open her eyes. She is scared, in a lot of pain, and has a very hard and long road ahead.
Lacey, Heather, and their family need to focus on recovery instead of worrying about finances. I am asking for any donation possible for Lacey and her family. No amount is too small and every dollar helps her fight against this horrible disease! Please pray for Lacey and share this with your friends and family!
It is in His hands.
