In July it was noticed Kye was having a little trouble seeing, so he was taken to the optometrist, who referred him to an ophthalmologist, where it was discovered he had very swollen optical nerves. Kye was immediately referred to Princess Margaret Hospital and sent for an MRI. The MRI results showed that Kye has a cystic brain tumor - craniopharyngioma. He was then rushed for emergency surgery that night to release the pressure of fluid build-up that was causing his sight to be affected.
After a few days of draining the fluid, Kye had another surgery to remove the tumor, however it was not possible to remove without causing him further permanent damage. He then developed hydrocephalus so required further surgery to insert a shunt to constantly drain the excess brain fluid internally back to his stomach. Kye has recovered well from his surgeries, however, has lost all vision.
Our next step is to attempt radiation therapy to eradicate the tumor. The safest radiation therapy for Kye is Proton radiation therapy which is not available in Australia, however is accessible in the USA.
This page has been created from family and friends to assist with helping Kye and his family reach America together so that little Kye can undergo the treatment with the support of his family around him. Also any ongoing treatment Kye may need in the future and expenses that will need to be paid whilst away and to get by in America.
Since Kye’s diagnosis there has been a tremendous financial burden on his family. Kye's father is the primary caregiver to Kye and younger siblings Telisha 6 and Raiden 1, whilst Kye’s mum works full time doing mine site admin work to support the family but will have to resign in the coming weeks so she can be home with the family. In the meantime Kye’s grandparents and other relatives have travelled long distances fom the north west of WA to help support the family as Kye needs regular visits to hospital with specialists and requires constant care with his adjustment losing his vision. Kye’s maternal grandmother has had to resign her employment and relocate with her youngest daughter to Perth to help in supporting the family and is awaiting her husband to be able to follow soon after. They have pooled their resources and income as much as possible to ensure Kye is supported adequately, but the upcoming treatment in the USA isn’t possible without the support of community.
