Central Valley Peer Support Center
-To educate, support, and comfort all families through birth in each trimester.

Goal: To create a multipurpose center used for the education of childbirth, newborn care, postpartum care and support, and comfort measures by skilled educators; a permanent support center, providing weekly, peer support groups for:

Parents experiencing perinatal loss, or infant loss.
Parents and family of NICU babies.
Adults choosing alternatives to parenting (i.e. open and closed adoption, Surrogacy, etc).
The space can also be utilized by other birth workers in the area (Doula's, midwives, etc.) as a teaching and training space, or meeting venue.

According to ACOG 1 in 4 pregnancies will end in a miscarriage. 1 in 160 end in a stillbirth. After a year of research in the Central Valley region, my discovery of the significant lack of supportive care in the form of comprehensive education, or peer support groups was shocking. Add in the fact that Modesto is home to a highly esteemed Level III NICU in the community hospital Doctor's Memorial Center, I decided I wanted to make a significant change in the area on how we handle these very critical, and sensitive times that families have.

The idea of Birth Workers Corner, manifested from a very small idea to have support groups in random coffee shops that had confirmed donated space for me to use a few hours a month. The more I thought of it, the more I knew that the sporadic and lengthy time between meetings, and lack of a safe environment, was a recipe for disaster in terms of healing broken and vulnerable individuals. Through my studies and experience as a birth and bereavement Doula, one thing that I have learned is that the isolation of new parents of any type - healthy gestation, premature, still born- isolation never brings forth a positive outcome, and often times can cause negative, long term side effects on families as a whole. The idea of opening a permanent space where people can feel safe, and comfortable in their journey of parenthood, no matter what that journey might look like, became something more that I could have ever imagined.

So here is the deal:
I have the space. I am fronting the first few months rent myself, because I truly believe in this space, in this idea, and I want this to happen. But I cannot do it without support! The space was just too great to pass up. We need $6,000 dollars for:

One full year's rent, $400 a month, 12 months, $4,800
The remaining $1,500 will be divided and allocated to:

Informational pamphlets
Business cards
Educational materials
Art and Journal supplies (these will be used in support groups as an positive outlet of grief or stress)

I know that with the help and kind hearts of others we can make this dream a reality, not just for me, but for so many families that need a safe space to feel supported and heard.
