Kusi Ñan's Music Trip to Ecuador

$2,745 of $3,600 goal

Introduction:
Kusi Ñan are a group of nine indigenous Andean youth from the sacred valley of Peru. Together they formed a traditional music group – “Conjunto Musical Tradicional Kusi Ñan” – to play and preserve the traditional music of their ancestors.

These incredible indigenous youth are fundraising so they can travel to Ecuador for one month to perform their music and share their culture. This trip will help them, and their community, grow their cultural networks and strengthen their bonds of solidarity with other indigenous communities.

I am an anthropology student and filmmaker and I have been living and working with these youth and their community for the past six months. Together we have decided to put together this campaign to help their group travel safely to Ecuador.

About Kusi Ñan:
These youth started their music group as an active way to express their indigenous identity and stay connected with their ancestors. Playing traditional music allows the youth to practice their culture and preserve their ancestral heritage, which is being lost in the chaos of the modern world.

The Kusi Ñan youth are walking in the footsteps of their ancestors and keeping their ancient culture alive. They have continued the cultural revival work of their parents and other elders of their community, who formed the traditional Andean music group Wiñay Taki, and who have served as an inspiration for these youth to follow in their footsteps and continue this important work to revitalize their ancestral culture and protect and preserve their way of life.

These youth have continued the fight of the elders of their community to keep their vibrant and beautiful ancestral heritage alive and thriving, in the face of almost 500 years of colonial oppression, discrimination, and violence for expressing their indigenous identity and practicing their traditional culture.

How you can help:
Together we ask for your generous donations to support these youth on their journey, so they may share the music of their ancestors with their native brothers and sisters from communities in Ecuador and Bolivia.

On February 1st, they will leave on their trip. The journey to Ecuador by land is very dangerous. When the youth last traveled there to perform, they almost died when their bus through the Andes narrowly avoided running off the road and over a treacherous cliff.

This campaign is to help the Kusi Nan youth pay for travel costs to improve the quality and safety of their trip. The goal is to raise enough money to pay for airfare for all nine members of the group. The price of airfare for each member is $402.50. The airfare cost for all nine members is $3,622.00.

Please note, if at the end of the campaign there are insufficient funds to pay for plane tickets for the whole group, then donations will go towards other travel costs, such as tickets for a safer bus or to hire one or two private vans, any lodging expenses, food, and other travel-related costs.

We have extended the campaign to run through the month of February, in order to continue supporting the youth during their trip.

Your support will make a huge difference for their personal safety and the quality of their journey.

We have some great perks for the different levels of donation.

The youth of Kusi Ñan send you a heartfelt thank you for your generous support and compassion.

A big heartfelt thank you to all of you wonderful people who have donated to the campaign in support of the Kusi Ñan youth and their traditional music group. They had an incredibly successful journey to Ecuador, and are now safely back home in Pisac, Peru.

A quick update: today was to be the last day of the campaign. Along with several private donations (not listed on gofundme) we are at $3,045 - 83% of our goal. This is HUGE for the youth, and on behalf of the youth and myself, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts!! We are incredibly grateful and humbled by the outpour of love and support.

In that light, I have decided to extend the campaign one more time until the end of this week. In case anyone would like to make a last minute donation and help us reach our goal. Any additional funds raised will go towards the group’s future trips to continue spreading and sharing their music and culture. The last day of the campaign is now: Sunday, March 4th, 2018.

Please consider sharing the campaign link to anyone else who may be interested in donating. Thank you! Urpillay Sonqollay!
