Backstory...
My name is Kris.
I have known I was trans since around 2012. It took several years to come out, and three years ago, I thought I was ready to transition.
A lot of things happened to my mental health during that time: I was coping with years of abuse, coming out of my shell, learning how to be an adult. I backpedaled on transition, at least a medical one, for some time while I nursed my wounds and got my feet underneath myself.
Now, I feel comfortable and ready. My life is mine for the taking. I cannot hide from who I am: apathy is not a feeling I should have for who I am. I am seeing a gender therapist who has reaffirmed my decision, and I'm just..ready.
My consultation will be scheduled in September after I obtain my letter of support in mid July. My surgeon has told me there is a 4-8 week window between consultation and surgery, which places my surgey between October and November 2018.
Full disclosure: I did some fund raising several years ago for my top surgery before I was ready. I still have some set aside from that time, but have used some for other medical expenses. I am not living in poverty and if push came to shove I could take out a loan and make it work. But I just wanted to reach out, hat in hand, and let my loved ones know I could use help.
Costs:
The estimated out of pocket expense given to my by my insurer is about 4100$, plus whatever anesthesia costs. Based on some calculations and my deductibles, I will need about 5200$. I am about half way there, but my partner and I cannot do it alone. It can't hurt to crowd fund, people have said that I should, and so, here I am.
I have applied to every Grant that I can, but I can't bank on that.
