Help Korean Orphanage Learn English

Donation protected
Hi! My name is Britta and I'm an English Teacher in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. I'm from Minnesota, USA. I'm raising money to start an English instruction program at Korean Orphanage in Phnom Penh.

The kids at KO are mostly orphans, but some are also given up by parents who can't afford to raise them. These kids get an education at the orphanage in Khmer. Due to the globalization of our world, English is becoming an invaluable skill in every field. Cambodia is a growing tourist destination and nearly every employer wants their workers to be able to communicate in English.

I want to give the lovely children at KO the best possible chance to succeed in life, and that includes teaching these highly motivated, positive, energetic kids some English. Currently, the kids at KO get English lessons only when LanguageCorpsAsia has enough student teachers to teach there for 2 weeks, which means the kids get sporatic, inconsistent, and repetative lessons on material that won't help them in the real world.

I'm asking for $3500. I'm planning on teaching 2 nights a week for 45 weeks out of the year. There are approximately 50 students, which I will divide into 2 classes. One class will be basic English with a goal of full fluency. This will be for students aged 4-14. The second class will be focused on English relating to jobs for students aged 14-17.

The funds raised will be spent in the following ways:

$20/week for matierals such as photocopies, markers, craft supplies, etc.
$20/workbook for 50 students
$2/notebooks for 50 students
$25/textbook, 1 per 2 students
$75/teacher guides (I need 2 sets, one per textbook set)
$300 for a battery powered portable projector for the classroom. The classes only have a whiteboard and chairs, nothing else. Having a projector allows the lessons to be far more flexible, engaging, and will introduce the kids to technology that they will interact with in the world.

This adds up to a total of $3075. I'm adding an additional $425 to my goal for unexpected expenses, such as shipping costs, more materials, VAT, etc. Most of the materials will be able to be used for years to come.

I will not be using any of the money for myself, and I will keep a clear log of how every dime is spent, with copies of the recipets for everyone to see. I will not be paid for my time teaching or my transportation costs unless donations are specifically given for that purpose.

Cambodia uses a combonation of USD and the local Riel. The exchange rate is approximately 4000riel=1USD.

I would like the funds by March 25th, 2016, or 6 weeks from today.

This project means a lot to me. I'm planning on staying in Cambodia for at least 3 years. This is a beautiful place. Phnom Penh is rapidly growing. The entire country is fighting to catch up with the rest of the world, after the devastation caused by the Khmer Rouge. (Please read up on Pol Pot's reign and the Khmer Rouge if you don't know what it is. This post is already far too long without getting into the history of Cambodia.) Approximately 2 million people died in 4 years as a result of the KR, and most were educated professionals. This has left Cambodia with a society that lost an entire generation of educated people, a gap which I want to help fill by teaching the children at KO. There are plenty of private English schools in Phnom Penh, but students at KO will never have a chance to attend those schools. I considered trying to fund classes at one of the schools in PP, but that would be even more costly. It would require transportation for all the students, uniforms, materials, and tuition, and it would also mess up the schedule of their Khmer classes put on at the orphanage. Bringing the classes to them decreases costs due to the free labor (me!) and convenient location (on site!)

I will be extremely grateful for any and all donations, no matter how small. Every penny helps give these kids a chance at a better future! But, let's be real, my own feelings don't matter here. The children at Korean Orphanage are the ones that matter. They are the ones who are getting a chance to be global citizens and have access to higher paying jobs. English is an invaluable skill for anyone in the world right now!

For every person that donates, I will hand write you a letter expressing my gratitude, detailing what your money is funding, and giving you a bio on one of the students. I will attempt to mail all the letters, but the postal system in Cambodia is iffy at best, so I'll likely end up scanning and emailing you the letters, to insure you recieve them.

And, if you can't donate, don't feel bad! Just spread the word for me! Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Whatsapp, Facebook, Tumblr, Blogger, whatever avenue you use to communicate! Lets make some dreams happen!
