The Koh-Ed Ghana Initiative is a project aimed at improving the education system of schools in Ghana. In late June of 2019, a student-led team will head to schools in Ghana to personally teach courses, donate school supplies, and present new learning systems.
The trip itself consists of a two-week experience in which 5-6 international students will be present in Ghana, teaching English, Math and Science to kids of all ages. Beyond teaching, the Koh-Ed team will perform multiple experiments made from everyday products for the children there, introducing the concept of "active learning". By involving students and teaching them hands-on using materials that they can also obtain, the Koh-Ed team hopes to show to both the schools and the kids that learning is multi-facetted. There are many ways of learning, and demonstrations/experiments can, in fact, be well-made with cheap and available materials.
During the trip, the Koh-Ed team will also be bringing high-quality school supplies for the different schools, as well as other teaching materials. All excess funds of the trip will also be donated to the schools.
The Ghana trip will not only promote the concept of active learning, but also provide valuable experiences to the children in Ghana and the international students.
Expenses:
$7000 - Trip. These funds are used to finance the trip for the 5-6 students, including costs such as plane tickets, lodging, and food.
$500 - Various. These funds are for other costs, such as the cost of vaccines, visas, and any other unexpected expenses.
$1000 - Supplies. These funds are required to pay for school supplies, experimentation materials, and anything that would be necessary to purchase for teaching.
Obviously, these expenses are not exact numbers, but are quite close to them. As stated earlier, any excess funds will be donated to the schools in Ghana. All funds raised for the project will either be financing the trip, paying for school materials, or be given directly to schools.
