Wheelchair-Friendly Kitchen for Mom

Hi. My name is Michael Yarsky, and I'm writing you all for help for my mother. Her name is Carol. She was diagnosed with polio in 1955, the same year that Jonas Salk created the vaccine in her hometown of Pittsburgh. Her mother, it turns out, was an "anti-vaxxer," and my mother has lived with polio all of her life.

She had always had limited mobility, but as time wears on and post-polio syndrome begins to wreak its havoc, other maladies begin: spinal stenosis, herniated discs, neck surgery, swollen legs, and chronic pain. She has been wheelchair-bound for 15 years, and simply cannot do what she enjoyed to do. She does, however, love her dog Molly and she loves to cook.

The joy she takes in cooking, however, is hindered by a small, cramped kitchen that is barely accessible and not friendly for the wheelchair-bound. She can't reach certain cabinets. Leaning over a sink hurts her back. Very little is in reach and she can't do what she loves.

But, there is hope: the kitchen can become accessible. Doorways can be adjusted, drawers can be moved, space can be made so that it's wheelchair-friendly and ergonomic. It just takes some renovations and some time, and she could have a great passion of hers back.

I am here to try to aid a differently-abled person to still having access to the joys and hobbies in her life without exacerbating her condition or worsening the pain. It's tough for her anymore to share her meals with the Allegheny County veterans because of the physical toll it takes. An entirely new wheelchair-friendly and accessible kitchen would do wonders for her.

Thank you all for your time.

Best,
Mike

Hello folks,

I'm happy to report that, thanks to some personal savings, additional donations through the GoFundMe, as well as direct donations, we have received the $25,000 goal and are officially done with this campaign.

This is a huge relief and a dream come true for my mother and she is absolutely delighted and thrilled with everyone's generosity and charity. I, too, am humbled and cannot express my thanks deeply enough.

Much love,
Mike

This Christmas, I *have* to ask for help, and I have to be blunt about this: now that the GOP is introducing a plan to cut Social Security, I'm very worried about how this will impact my mother. She has been on Social Security for a while now, because post-polio syndrome and the onslaught of complications that come with it have rendered her unable to work. My father, who is 64, is on the verge of retirement.

I fear that the outcome of the election will put the health and safety of millions like my Mom - disabled members of the working class - in jeopardy. With dark days ahead, we may need your help more than over.

It is with a heavy heart that I say the election will yield devastating consequences for my family.

We know Donald Trump is filling his transition team with people advocating the dismantling of Social Security. We know that Paul Ryan wants to privatize Medicare. Federal funding for Medicaid is in danger.

Social Security & Medicare have been crucial for my mom to stay afloat, bar none. And now, with this much uncertainty on the horizon, there's a possibility that she might not be lean on these resources like so many Americans once could.

Which is why I come to ask once again for help. I want to protect her from serious harm by making her living situation more ergonomic and wheelchair-friendly. The better equipped our house is, the less stress she'll put on her back, her feet, and neck, and the less she'll have to get shots in those places to ease the pain.

Join me in making this happen. If we can raise enough in time, we'll have a safeguard for her physical health.

Many thanks,

Mike

Hello all!

We have passed the half-way mark! My Mom is recovering well from her stroke.

Just writing to chime in and say we are still fighting the good fight over here and that the fundraiser is still within reach of its goal!
