I have been battling bipolar disorder, depression and anxiety for the past eight years. I have recently been hospitalized three times within the past three months for depressive episodes. I am doing everything that I can(therapy, outpatient day treatment, and medications) to get better.
However, I recently found out that service dogs are not just for physical disabilities. Psychiatric Service Dogs (PSD) provide help to those struggling with depression, bipolar, and other mental disabilities. I believe that in addition to the love and companionship a dog provides, this training will help me to live a more stable, happy, and healthy life.
A road block has come up in my journey to find a psychiatric service dog as there are none in Hawaii. I plan to get an Emotional Support dog(ESA) which is basically just a step below a PSD. I also plan to train my dog to do some of the same things a PSD could do, the dog just wouldn't be considered a service dog in the eyes of the law.
My entire support system is on board with this idea and everything is in place except since Hawaii does not have any organizations that place psychiatric service dogs, my family and I have found a training program that can train my dog in ways that help manage symptoms of my depression and anxiety.
This is where I need some extra support financially as the program will cost +$3,000. I am planning on getting my dog sometime towards the middle of this year so if you can, my family and I would greatly appreciate your support as we go through this process to receive the necessary training for my future furry friend. Anything and everything counts, thank you!
