Calling All Human-Angels

My beloved husband Kim has a heart of gold.  For the last 25 years he's spent his life in service to others. As a Healing Arts Practitioner, he has helped many people improve their lives.  He's offered a path to pull people out of the shadows so they can transcend all kinds of difficulties to find inner peace. But now, Kim really needs your help in his quest to heal from cancer.   In October 2017, Kim was diagnosed with Stage 4, Base of Tongue Squamous Cell Carcinoma which has migrated to his lymph glands. Surgery is not possible due to the complicated location of the tumor.

Kim's Treatment Plan

Kim is receiving MTET: "Multi Targeted Epigenetic Therapy" with Dr. Nezami in Newport Beach, CA. This is a cutting edge,  Epigenetic cancer treatment with an impressive success rate. It generates results, even with very advanced cancer patients who were sent home to die by their doctors.  Dr. Nezami looks at the genetic profile of the individual cancer (with specialized lab tests).  And he utilizes advanced molecular technologies to match tumors with the treatments that will give the best response.   Kim's genetic tests revealed the specific pathways that need to be addressed in his case.  And he also tested positive for Circulating Tumor Cells. These are cancer cells that have detached from the primary tumor and travel through the bloodstream, with the potential to affect other parts of the body.

Because of the Circulating Tumor Cells, Dr. Nezami says that Radiation would be a bad idea as a first course of action.  It might shut down the activity of Kim's tumors,  but it wouldn't do anything to address the Circulating Tumor Cells.   In fact, Kim was at high risk for further metastasis and recurrence.  In essence, radiation would have bought Kim some time (while creating misery from side effects) but it would cause a much bigger disaster later on down the road. Once they radiate your mouth / throat, and you have a cancer recurrence, the radiation cannot be repeated again. There is simply too much damage to healthy tissue. All they can do is bust open your jaw to remove your tongue, and then resect your lymph glands.

Instead, Dr. Nezami is treating Kim's cancer at it's source: The stem cells. Kim receives this treatment by IV drip. He's getting three bags a day of high dose, non-toxic Nutraceuticals, which takes 6 hours per day.  Kim has completed 3 weeks so far and is heading into week 4.   He's also on three different pharmacuetical prescription drugs for 6 weeks. These are not chemo drugs, but they go after some of the genetic targets in question.  Blood tests were taken after the 2 week mark to monitor progress.  The results were absolutely amazing! It showed that Kim is responding beautifully to the treatment.   Some of his markers have already come into the normal range, but they still need to get his circulating tumor cell count below threshold. This may take a few more weeks.  Once all the cancer in the blood is fully under control, they will discuss whether or not Kim needs to do Proton Radiation as a second line of defense to finish off the tumors. Proton is a type of radiation that results in less collateral damage than Intensity Modulated Radiation.  It is a better option that will help preserve Kim's future quality of life and reduce suffering.

There is no one anywhere offering quite what Dr. Nezami offers. So we feel really lucky to have found him right here in California. Kim is in the right place to get the right kind of help. And we are confident this will move things in the right direction.   During all of this, Kim continues with his intensive Health Food / Cleansing / Juicing Protocols.

Please Partner with Us to Help Kim Heal and Preserve his Quality of Life

Join us in Kim's journey as he pursues his best chance for the least destructive treatment possible.  Even if you can only contribute $10, or $20,  every small amount helps.  Thank you for your Love and Support, and most of all, Thank you for caring.

How These Funds Will be Used

Our goal of $15,000 contributes towards part of the overall cost of MTET.  So far, Kim's medical debt has gone over $30,000 and is steadily climbing. If Kim proceeds to Proton Radiation, this will cost an additional $40,000.  We have been warned by the doctor that Kim's insurance probably won't cover Proton.   And beyond this, he will still need monthly follow up infusions for a few years in order to keep him cancer-free for the long haul.  MTET is not covered by insurance either.  100% of funds raised here will go towards Kim's cancer treatment.

Some of our donors have raised concerns that GoFundMe tries to add a tip for itself (to keep the platform running) when you donate to this campaign. You don't have to do that! A drop-down menu will let you add 5%, 10%, 15%, or a custom amount to GoFundMe on top of your donation to Kim.  You can choose a custom amount of Zero if you do not want to pay a platform fee to GoFundMe.

Hello everyone,

I have another good news update to share about Kim's progress. He recently completed another 2 weeks of IV-Treatment with Dr. Nezami. We got the blood lab results a few days ago. I'm happy to report that all cancer markers came back normal. A couple of very important markers were:

1) Tgf Beta 1 (Trans Growth Factor Beta 1). This is a pathway that when elevated, allows cancer stem cells to proliferate more aggressively.

2) VGEF (Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor). A tumor produces this in high amount when it's growing aggressively and creating new blood vessels to feed itself.

Last time Kim was tested, his Tgf Beta 1 dropped from 35,000 to 6,000, which put it in a normal range. But his VGEF count was only 50% improved at that time. And now.......... it's normal! Having these two markers lowered is a real milestone. It means that the cancer's metastatic potential is under control. This was partly verified by the last PET Scan, which was already showing a 30% improvement in the actual tumors.

The goal going forward is to fully shut off the activity of the tumors. It's already happening, but these are very hypoxic, stubborn tumors so it will take extra time and patience. Dr. Nezami has come up with a very novel strategy. He obtained the original tissue sample from Kim's surgical biopsy. And he sent it to a Laboratory that tests for genetic mutations. With this information, the doctor was able to match the tumor mutations with a cocktail of pharmaceutical drugs that all work synergistically to target those particular pathways. Sometimes we feel like Dr. Nezami is more like an engineer than a doctor. And in this case, that's a very, very good thing.

Honestly, Kim does not like taking all these drugs because there are side effects: He feels tired all the time, he has a lot of brain fog, and there are a few other annoyances. One of the drugs is low dose Etoposide. This is an oral chemotherapy that stops cells from dividing and DNA from replicating. The doctor promised that Kim wouldn't feel any adverse side effects. And nearly 20 days into it, he doesn't feel any different than he did from all the other Medications he's taking.

Kim will do anything to avoid radiation to his face, and all the disfigurement that can cause. So he decided that Etoposide would be far less damaging and worth the risks. And if it works, it will be an amazing outcome. None of the three Oncologists Kim consulted offered to do any genetic customization for for him. So we think it's remarkable! Let's hope it works 100%.

Thanks for reading, and we will be in touch in a few months once we have new PET Scan results.

Love and Blessings,
Angela & Kim Bothwell

Hello everyone,

I have good news to share today. Kim has completed a new PET / CT Scan. The results show a 30% reduction in metabolic activity of the primary tumor as well in two adjacent lymph nodes. Additionally, some of the nodes have shrunk. Blood tests show that his circulating tumor cell count continues to drop. It's a relief to have evidence of improvement!

Kim was hoping for a bigger improvement than 30%. But Dr. Nezami is actually very happy with these results. And he recommended that Kim stay the course on his current treatment path and complete another week or two of IV infusions. After that, the doctor might adjust Kim's medications to try some new approaches.

Kim is also seeing a new Oncologist (Dr. Hager) who is familiar with Dr. Nezami's work. Kim's previous Oncologist yelled at us and used foul language when we asked him "too many questions" about what could happen to Kim's throat / teeth / thyroid / etc. So it felt like winning the lottery when Dr. Hager offered support (rather than condemnation) in the form of PET Scans to monitor Kim's situation.

I have learned through this experience that If you go "off the grid" for cancer treatment (trying to avoid radiation, as Kim is), it is much more difficult to find real support. That is why I want to thank all of you for the positive and loving support you have already shown to Kim. You are like bright, shining lights in a sea of impossible darkness.

This has been a scary, precarious, surreal, and unbelievable experience! But at least we can breathe a small sigh of relief today. I'll be in touch with you all in a couple of months to share more updates once we reach the next milestone of Kim's progress. In the meantime, I know you will feel as happy as we do with this news.

Peace and blessings,
Angela & Kim Bothwell

Hello everyone. I want to give you all a update on Kim's treatment status. So far, he has completed 4.5 weeks of Epigenetic Treatment. We got the last batch of test results, and there is good news to share. Kim's circulating tumor cell count has gone down again. So with each test, he is showing positive progress. Since his treatment path is working, he will continue on it. At the moment, Kim is in "waiting" mode. He's not receiving IV's, but he is still taking his oral Medications. Soon he will see an Oncologist in Fresno who works closely with Dr. Nezami. There may be some immune therapies that can further help with Kim's tumor type. A sample from Kim's earlier surgical biopsy was tested against medicines that may be effective. And several solutions were indicated. Additionally, Kim will have a CT Scan to determine if his tumors have shrunk. After that, Dr. Nezami will figure out whether or not Kim needs to come in for more IV's or not. We wish all of this could happen faster, and medical appointments were available sooner. But it takes time, and we are doing our best to be patient. Also, we are reminding ourselves that it takes years and years for cancer to develop. And it's not reasonable to expect it to disappear overnight either! It's a process. What I can tell you is that Kim looks and feels great. His lymph glands seem smaller than they ever have since this started. And we are just grateful to be getting a highly customized form of treatment. Extensive genetic testing of cancer in each person doesn't normally happen in Oncology. Everyone is put into the same standardized box. I can't imagine any scenario where Kim should be placed in that box! It's scary to go off the grid and do a different, innovative kind of treatment. And believe me, we have been criticized for it. But I'm so glad we pressed on to find doctors who will actually do something progressive and customized! It may be a month or more before I have another update, but I will let you all know what's happening. Thanks for reading, and blessings to you all.

Hello everyone. I have a quick update about Kim's progress. More of his blood tests have come in and they are showing a 50% improvement in his circulating tumor cell count. He is not yet below threshold, but he is getting there steadily. Dr. Nezami has asked him to come in for a fourth week of continuous treatment. And it looks like he will do this at the Fresno, CA office starting on Monday. After that, the doctor will run tests again to see where things stand. Kim is looking great and feeling pretty good too. But all of his tumor sites are unusually inflamed right now and bothering him. It was explained to us that this treatment strips the tumors of it's defenses and strengthens the immune system to attack. So there is a war going in there and it's really no surprise that things are so inflamed. Overall, it's all great news to share!
It's happening!
