Kim’s Fight Against Breast Cancer w/No Insurance

Donation protected
Kim needs your help. She is without insurance through no fault of her own and battling breast cancer. Please help!

Kim Young is lifelong member of the Lauderdale County community battling Breast Cancer and needs our help. She is the Pharmacy Director at Lauderdale Community Hospital and was previously the Remote Pharmacy Program Director for a national hospital system, who owned and operated the Lauderdale Community Hospital. Kim is the Daughter of Barry and Debra Younger and is Married to David Young of Halls. David's parents are Bud and Clare Young of Halls. Kim and David have two girls, Erin and Ellie Young. Erin is a pre-med student an UT Martin and Ellie is Junior at Halls High School.

                                                               Kim's Story

Kim was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in Oct of 2018. She has had four major surgeries since then and is now undergoing weekly chemotherapy. She will need to have additional surgeries (3 or more) in the next 12-24 months, including a double mastectomy. After treatment, Kim will have to take costly medications for the next 5-10 years of her life. All of these lifesaving measures are expensive and even more so given her situation.

Kim’s prior employer has had a number of issues, which have been publicly broadcast in the national news. These issues appear to have left Kim with NO INSURANCE and medical bills totaling over $300,000 for the events previously mentioned. Unfortunately, this total doesn’t include her ongoing or future treatment needs.

Thankfully, a new management company, which has taken control of the hospital via court order, is trying to get Kim insurance coverage. Even if they are successful, Kim will likely have a gap in coverage. She will still have to resolve the issue of her prior treatments and surgeries, which currently remain unpaid. Her new coverage will not cover the prior expenses.

The unpaid bills and potential lack of insurance are no fault of hers. She has been paying her premiums with every paycheck and had even purchased other specialty insurances along the way, like a cancer policy. All of this to find out that her premiums may not have been paid to the insurance providers and she may have no insurance coverage at all. Unfortunately, these matters will now have to be sorted out legally.

Today, Kim is trying to focus on her treatments and not the chaos of the hospital or the insurance issues that seem to be at play. She is working diligently to help the new management company at the hospital get her reinsured. Still, the expenses are extreme and the prior expenses may become a real issue if unresolved.

Kim is asking for help with the following expenses:

$6,500 - 2018 Deductible and plan Maximum
$6,500 - 2019 Deductible and Plan Maximum
$6,500 - 2019 Deductible and Plan Maximum (new insurance)
$30,000 - Gap treatments (best case scenario)
$15,000 - Legal Fees: Prior company/provider currently not honoring
insurance claims. This is going to force Kim to pursue legal action
$3,500 - Personal comfort items (Bed, clothes, etc…)
$12,000 - Cost of medications not covered by insurance

TOTAL $80,000 in current expenses

Kim and David are doing what they can to pay these costs, but even this staggering amount is just the tip of the iceberg. These are the costs assuming she has the insurance she previously paid and no other expenses are incurred.

As mentioned above, Kim has over $300,000 in unpaid expenses due to the ongoing insurance and employer issues. She has 10 more chemo treatments that cost anywhere from $5,000 to $25,000 each. She will need to have 3 to 5 additional surgeries or more, which could easily cost in excess of $500,000.

While the family anticipates having to pursue legal action against the former employer, we have no way to predict how that will go. Even if it is possible, this will likely take years to resolve in court and we cannot wait to take action for her.

Kim urgently needs help so she can continue her treatments and other surgeries as scheduled. Any help is appreciated. If you want more details or think you can help in other ways that is welcome too.
