Kim Horning Back on Both Feet

This month started with quite a fall down a hill that turned my life on a dime.  I had two severely broken ankle bones and a dislocation.  Surgical intervention was required to properly set the bones.  Without medical insurance, I had to think quick!  So, on August 7th, I ventured to Mexico for orthopedic surgery.  This was my best option as estimates from local hospitals were outrageous.  My ankle has been properly set with multiple screws and metal plates.  Now, I am honoring the healing process.

It is with a heavy heart and much sorrow that I will not be able to see patients for the next 8-12 weeks.  My surgeon thinks that I should be able to return to work in October.  In the meantime, I will be off of my ankle, focusing on healing, and unable to work.

This has been quite the humbling experience.  I'm used to taking care of things and doing things on my own and have chosen a career centered around helping others.  I’m not used to asking for help.   After much soul searching, I have decided to accept help by starting this GoFundMe page.  My Harmony family has offered to help raise funds to cover the medical expenses associated with this injury.   Currently, my medical bills total $17,000 and include the initial Emergency Room visit, Orthopedic exam/bone setting, x-rays, labs, surgery in Mexico, and post-operative care.  I have not started physical therapy yet.

So I’m going to humbly ask with my heart in my hands that you donate to my cause.  Ask one person that you know to donate to my cause.  You know I will pay it forward.  I just need to get through to the other side of this health challenge.  I need your help.  There I said it and I asked for it.  The rest is up to the Universe.  I’m humbled.  I’m listening.

I feel so humbled and grateful for all of you.  I truly see my patients as my family and can’t wait to get back to helping all of you on your paths towards wellness!  I hope to return in October, back on BOTH feet.

Many Blessings to You All.

With Much Love,

(Harmony Community Wellness Center is also accepting donations at the front desk.)

Happy November All!

My oh my how time is flying by! I can't believe it is November ALREADY! I love this time of year. Fall is my favorite season. I'm ready for the most beautiful sunsets of the year and the cooler days and nights. Although it's 91 degrees outside my door here in Fallbrook right now! LOL

Anyhoo, I just wanted to let you all know that I'm progressing albeit ever so slowly. I can now put about 25% of my weight on my foot. I still feel the sharp pain of the metal especially on the inside ankle each time I put the weight on the ankle. The foot is still discolored and swollen so I'm hoping as that resolves, the sharp pain will go away as will the numbness that follows the pain. I go back to the doc in a couple weeks for another x-ray and exam. I will know more then. It doesn't look like I will be back to work before the new year at this point. I'm very disappointed. But I'm listening to my doctor and following his "take it slowly" orders:-(((

As far as health insurance goes. I won't be eligible for new insurance until Jan 1 2019. The cost is still prohibitive - $400 a month and big deductible and of course with HMO - referral to a specialist takes some time. I don't know how but that has to be done. I am keeping the faith that things will work out without having to go deeper into debt.

Thank you all again for your encouragement and support. It means the world to me.

I know it has been quite a while since I updated everyone. I apologize. It's been a rough last few weeks. I went back to TJ for my post op visit in mid-September and got the okay to start putting 10-15% weight on my foot using my crutches. I was also given the ok to start flexion and extension exercises. Well, I got a bit overzealous with my crutch-work and thought I could add a watering can and gardening to my rehab balancing repertoire. I am ashamed and embarrassed to say that I lost my balance, put all my weight on my foot, fell down hit my ankle on a large planter, cut open my incision and landed on my butt. I know. I cannot believe how stupid that was. I was just feeling good and overconfident. I thought I broke my foot again. I contacted the doctor the next day because my foot swelled up so badly and turned red and purple and every vein was popping out. Doc saw the pics and said ice and elevate and stay off it. Three days later decided to get my friend to take me down to TJ for x-rays and exam. No broken bones thank goodness but I did some soft tissue damage by tearing the scar tissue and ligament where the dislocation occurred. I got a good talking to by the doctor and was told I set myself back about a month of recovery. That was almost 3 weeks ago. Unfortunately, the circulation has not improved much. I am sending pictures and touch base with the doctor. Recovery is slow. I haven't left the house since the trip to TJ three weeks ago. I stay still and keep it elevated. I am looking for a PT person this coming week to see if I can get things moving along. I am concerned about the circulation. Doc says its superficial and as long as the swelling goes away when it's elevated not to worry. Just be patient. I'm trying to be patient and be a good patient. I just wanted to update you all and thank you again for all your encouragement and support.

Also, it has been brought to my attention that I should break down my medical charges for this broken ankle and justify my request for $20,000. First let me reiterate - I am one of the many American's who are uninsured. I make just over the amount to get subsidies and the "affordable" monthly payments for the lowest costing healthcare plan are not affordable they are unrealistic. This doesn't even include my share of cost nor the $5,000 annual deductible. Thus, I take my chances and try to be healthy and stay well. Then a fall. It all goes to hell. Here goes the breakdown:

$4000 for ER visit
$400 for the Nurse Practitioner and the Tech at the ER
$50 for Radiologist to Read X-rays
$350 for the Orthopedist to Re-set the dislocation
$12,500 for the Orthopedic Surgery in Tijuana, Mexico
$200 for Medications

That's $17,500 right now. I need more x-rays next week and I will be receiving a Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) injection if those x-rays and the Doc's follow-up exam say that is an option after 8 weeks post-op. I will probably need Physical Therapy as well.

This doesn't take into account that I have living expenses and bills to pay either. I will be receiving a little temporary disability allotment monthly but I still have mouths to feed and bills to pay.

I am so grateful to my landlord and good friend Ana for taking me and staying with me in the hospital for the surgery. She has taken me to TJ twice now. It is a lot for her physically because she has had four back surgeries and being in the car for all that driving and sitting at the border crossings for hours is too much for her. I am looking for 2 more rides across the border for next weeks x-ray appointment and the first or second week in October for the injection. She is a blessing. She really looks after me and my kitty babies while I'm laid up. She keeps me going.

I hope that clears up why I'm asking for the amount I'm asking for. I will try to figure out how to get insurance for open enrollment but for now it's back and forth to TJ. Hospital Angeles is a great facility and I have been well taken care of and treated with nothing but kindness and compassion.

Thank you everyone for taking the time to check out my campaign and sharing it.

Blessings to you all.

5.5 weeks! I will never EVER take walking for granted again. The swelling has gone down. The pain is tolerable. The thing I hate the most is the feeling of a dead foot. There is numbness and tingling and I really feel the metal poking at me all the time. The good thing is Doc said that I can get the metal taken out after 18 months. It's not permanent.
