Dear friends and family,
A few months before his son was born in 2015, my cousin, Kier Bass, was diagnosed with a rare soft tissue tumor, a sarcoma, in his right abdominal psoas muscle. In September 2015 Kier had surgery to remove the sarcoma and shortly thereafter, Kier and his wife Naoko celebrated the arrival of their baby boy, Hayling.
However, it wasn't long before Kier's tumor recurred and spread, resulting in constant travel to Houston, TX for radiation and chemotherapy treatments at the Sarcoma Center at MD Anderson.
Then, in December 2016, Kier was about to go back to Houston for another round of treatment, when a metastatic tumor caused a rupture of the intestine, requiring emergency surgery. He has been in the hospital since then with complications from that intestinal rupture.
Kier has been battling this sarcoma for the past year and a half, which includes the entire duration of his baby son's life, and the cancer has taken its toll on both Kier and Naoko. Throughout it all, Kier has always remained an upbeat, loving husband, a devoted father to Hayling, and very dedicated to his job at Apple.
