Kevlar the K9's Parvo Treatment

Donation protected
My name is James Langlois. I want to start off by saying this is not a cry for money, this is a cry to help shut down this "adoption agency" numerous people have "adopted" parvo infected dogs. I am a senior at Chestnut Hill College and graduate in May with my Bachelors degree in Sociology.

On Saturday, March 18th, 2017, I went to Pet Supplies Plus in Chester, New Jersey. After filling out an online application to adopt a German Shepard Lab mix for $380, I was asked to come to the adoption fair to pick out and adopt a dog. We arrived around 11am and left the store with Kevlar around 12pm.

Kevlar was very sleepy and slept during the 2 hour car ride home. Around 1pm, an hour into the drive, Kevlar began to vomit. A few minutes later he began to have extreme diarrhea. I passed this behavior off as stress to the whole day and possibly car sickness. After this episode, Kevlar slept until he experienced more diarrhea and vomiting around 4pm. Afterwards, Kevlar fell right back asleep. Around 5pm I tried to feed him dinner and he would not eat anything that was offered to him. At 5:30pm, he began to vomit and had extreme diarrhea again. Kevlar fell back asleep until an hour later at 6:30pm he had another episode. Only 20 minutes later, he began to throw up again. I tried calling Caring Canine Connections twice, but there was no answer. At this point, I called Ocean View Veterinary Hospital and explained Kevlar’s situation. The doctor advised I take Kevlar to the veterinary hospital right away. On the way to the to vet, Kevlar vomited twice. During the hospital visit, he threw up and had diarrhea.

The doctor noticed the puppy was very lethargic and explained since it was the first few hours of having the puppy, it was unclear if it was stress or parasites or any other disease. The night of March 18th, 2017, I spent $217 on fluids, medication to stop diarrhea, anti-nausea medication, and a few other medications to help Kevlar.

I arrived home at 10:30pm and Kevlar still refused to eat and only slept. I woke up and took him outside around 6am on March 19th and Kevlar barely had any energy to move his body. He began to throw up. Once again at 9:30am he threw up. After 3 hours of being in his crate, I had to pick him up because he would not stand up. Once outside, Kevlar laid in the grass and threw up 3 times in 20 minutes. Any time Kevlar’s stomach was touched, he would cry and begin to burp. We called the vet and the doctor said he should not be throwing up at all with the medication he was on and seems that his condition was deteriorating and asked to bring Kevlar back in. At 1:30pm they took a swab for a parvo test and it came back positive. The doctor explained that Kevlar was a very, very sick dog and for 3 days of aggressive treatment would be an estimate of $2,000.00.

Kevlar slept the 24 hours I had him and only woke up to vomit or had diarrhea. He refused to eat and lost the ability to move his body or pick up his head. After the doctor diagnosed Kevlar with parvo, I immediately called the pet store which hosted the adoption and advised them that their stores was possibly contaminated with parvovirus. I called Paula, a worker of Caring Canine Connections, and she told me there was no possible way the puppy had parvo. Even after speaking to the veterinarian for several minutes, she still refused to accept the puppy was sick. The director of the rescue, Daniel, answered the next phone call and proceeded to explain there was nothing wrong with the dog and he must have eaten something. He then offered to pick up the dog and take him to their hospital of choice, Blairstown Animal Hospital. I called the hospital and the doctor explained they were only open during the day and a person would check on Kevlar every 4-5 hours. The veterinarian explained to us that Kevlar needed 24 hour supervision and care in order to even have a chance of beating this virus. Daniel became very loud and aggressive making it very clear the dog was not sick and we would not get our money back along with any aid for any medical bills.

After reviewing Kevlar’s medical history, he had a 103.7 fever the day before I adopted him. Blairstown Animal Hospital signed off on this. There was also record of 2 shots of Flagyl which is to treat diarrhea. Also proof Kevlar was sick long before the adoption. Lastly, Blairstown Animal Hospital gave Kevlar 2 vaccinations over the course of two weeks instead of 4 weeks well knowing he did not need this shot for a few weeks due to the fact they gave us paperwork stating to not give him this vaccination until he was 10-12 weeks old.

My veterinarian filled out paperwork stating that Kevlar was unfit for sale.

After we took Kevlar home, I began looking for other people who possibly adopted puppies from Caring Canine Connections. I found 3 other adopters over the course of 10 months and 3 liters that have brought home puppies sick with parvo. Everyone of them called the director of CCC, and each time they were told the dog did not have parvo, but they would pick up the dog and take him/her to Blairstown Animal Hospital for treatment free of charge. Two of the adopters went to the "foster home" to pickup their puppies. The foster home was kennels and barns out in mud holding dozens of puppies. The three of us began to investigate further and spread the word to stop people from adopting puppies from this "rescue". One of the directors had a previous rescue called, Paula's Dog House that was shut down from distributing sick dogs. A previous worker from Blairstown Animal Hospital contacted us and said she quit the hospital because they use low quality drugs and when CCC brings in parvo puppies, they do not keep them on fluids overnight. Fluids are VITAL in fighting off the parvo virus; therefore, the puppies do not make it.

This adoption has been a nightmare and a poor puppy spent it's first few weeks fighting for his life. Please share this, not as much for the donation, but to spread the word that Caring Canine Connections is a puppy mill using the title as "Rescue".

If you or anyone you know has adopted a dog from Caring Canine Connections, please contact me and several other adopters to join the fight to shut down these people.
